This three movement suite was inspired by the composer's reading of Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone. The work is based on a tone row taken from the musical letters contained within the title. "Black Pointed Hats" in D minor sets the scene, with the bass instruments playing an accented form of the tone row. Note clusters and chromatic movement help to create the mysterious sound palette for listeners to let their imagination run riot. The contrary motion in the upper woodwinds at the beginning of "Spells" gives a mesmerizing effect. The third movement, "Flying Broomsticks," evokes the image of young wizards flying around, using chromatic runs and various accented sections where the flying is not so smooth. Both themes used in this movement combine to form a grand flypast!

Arsenal was composed for the 50th anniversary of the 'Harmonie van het Spoorwegarsenaal' [railroad arsenal], based in Mechelen (Belgium). Rather a stately concert march, it has beautiful themes and a broad melody in the trio. It was premiered in the Mechelen Cultural Center on the 11th of May 1996 during the solemn ceremony, opening the anniversary year and conducted by the composer. Folk music plays an important role in the life of the Ukrainian people. Their country covers an area of over 600.000 square kilometres and has more than fifty million inhabitants. In the north there are vast woods, in the west one finds the picturesque Carpatian mountains and valleys, and in the centre and the south Ukraine has its famous steppes with fertile black soil. The river Dnjepr divides the country in two, forming a natural frontier between the western and eastern regions, which each have their own distinctively different musical folklore. This diversity forms the musical basis for Ukrainian Rhapsody. The work consists of three movements: the first one, in a moderate tempo, without a pause flows into a slow but very expressive middle movement, resulting in a powerful climax. The title of the third movement, Ballaviejo, means 'Antique Dance', in which the word antique refers to the rhythms that were taken to America by Africa's black population. Extra Score. This suite - originally a brass band work - was commissioned jointly by the Black Dyke Band and the Brass Band Heritage Trust. The composer later made this version for concert band. The work is intended to be played without a break but divides naturally into three sections. Each section is based upon a traditional Welsh melody treated in free variation manner, respectively Gwyr Harlech (Men of Harlech), Suo-Gan (Cradle Song) and Codiad Yr Hedydd (The Rising of the Lark).
