The annual Iditarod Trail Dog Sled Race between the Alaskan cities of Anchorage and Nome covers 1,049 challenging miles of jagged mountain ranges, dense forests and windswept coastlines. This amazing feat of endurance was theinspiration for Iditarod. In cinematic fashion, the point of view cuts from long-shots to close-ups (from the dog's view to the eagle's), constantly moving forward with a relentless pulse. With a brief respite, a majestic,sweeping theme is introduced and develops. And then - back to the race! Wild Rose Jamboree conjures up the pioneer spirit and the big-sky panorama of Alberta, Canada's heartland. The cinematic approach to the music captures the essence of life in wild rose country - famous for its rodeos, warm-hearted people, majestic mountains and wide-open spaces. With a high-spirited hoedown and a rich, reverent theme that features a trumpet solo and a flute/clarinet duet, this composition could be a dynamic show opener or festival piece. Wild Rose Jamboree can be effectively performed by a mixed group (junior band and senior band, for example), the upper parts being at a medium level and the lower parts (flute 2, clarinet 3, alto saxophone 2, trumpet 3, horn 2 and trombone 2) at an easier level. The inspiration for this unique composition came from the charming Iroquois folk melody, Ho Ho Watanay and the ancient Ojibwe legend of the dreamcatcher. It was believed that the magical webs of the dreamcatcher would filter out all bad dreams and only allow good thoughts to enter the mind. Using evocative percussion effects, colorful orchestration and harmonies, Dreamcatcher sounds much more impressive and advanced than its grade level would suggest.
