Don Vctor - Ferrer Ferran
Don V ctor, a festive paso doble with a typically Valencian character, evokes the atmosphere of the "Fallas", the Valencian festivals held every March, and of the festivities around the bullfights. This paso doble can be performed as a concert march or a street march. A brilliant trumpet solo gives the piece its Spanish flavour bringing the sound and feel of a hot balmy evening spent at a bullfight.

Days Remembered was written for the High School Band, located in Kitakyushu city, Fukuoka Japan, in celebration of 30th anniversary of their annual concert. The premiere was held on March 21, 2015 at the Yahata Citizen Hall conducted by Mr. Tetsuro Nakanishi, director. In Japan, fiscal year starts in April and ends in March; students graduate in March. So director requested him to compose lyrical piece which can be used at ceremony, such as graduation and entrance ceremonies.

'Martenizza' is the Bulgarian word for the month March. This work describes an old custom in Bulgaria introduced to the composer was through Ivo Stoykov, a Bulgarian acquaintance. In accordance with tradition good friends give each other a number of white and red pennants on the 1st of March. When a stork has been spotted for the first time in March, the pennants are hung in a tree, and one can make a wish. According to the custom, friends wish each other health and happiness for the coming year.

Lux Futura (Light of the Future) was commissioned by the Royal Wind Orchestra Delft and is inspired by the letters 'D-E-L-F-T' using the letter notation system by Bla Bartk. In this 'Delft' cell, there is referral to the 'Trinitas', the bourdon bell of the Old Church in Delft, that only tolls during a funeral of a member of the Dutch Royal Family. The Delft melody switches to the 'Agneta March', which is a reference to the history of the Royal Wind Orchestra Delft. Further on the love theme, played by the bass instruments represents the love of the inhabitants for their city throughout space and time. In the middle movement, the beauty of the city is depicted by the coranglais (English horn) solo, as an ode to the lovely city of Delft. When performed, one can choose to use sound city samples recorded in Delft to create a truly magnificent spectacle. This composition is based on the children's song 'Three Blind Mice', of which the melody is featured in a range of variations: in a canon, in inversion, in minor, transformed, with changing harmonisations and orchestrations, and in different times and tempi. The work consists of three continuous, contrasting movements: 1) Mouse March: The mice cheerfully set off while the original melody is presented as a march. - 2) Hymn: In a tuneful hymn, the wonderful praises of the life of mice are sung. - 3) Catch Me If You Can: In an animated chase, the farmer's wife is trying to catch the mice. Following a stirring acceleration, she cuts off their tails in accordance with the lyrics of the song. I hope this work, with its humorous touch, will be a welcome contribution to the expansion of interesting repertoire for the lower divisions. - Bert Appermont
