Away in a Manger Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
In English-speaking countries 'Away in a Manger' is one of the first Christmas songs to be taught to little children. It is a moving song with simple words, which makes it easy to understand. The song is also known as 'Luther's Cradle Hymn'. This suggests that Martin Luther was the author of the lyrics. According to researchers, however, this is a misconception - the author is unknown. In England 'Away in a Manger' is sung to a different melody than in the USA, for example. The 'English' melody was composed by W.J. Kirkpatrick. Andrew Mackereth made a touching arrangement of the 'English' melody, which suits the tender lyrics perfectly. 01:45

Noel" is based on the famous English Carol "The First Noel". The age of this song is not clear.Some scientists argue that tis song is from early thirteenth century, others say that it's from the sixteenth century.The first publication was in 'Christmas Carols, Ancient and Modern', compiled by William B. It is not necessary to have all parts being played for these arrangements. Most will work fine with just the two Trumpet/Clarinet parts and a bass line from trombones, tubas or bassoons. With the exception of the bassoon part, all instruments have a part 1 (more advanced and with key signatures) and a part 2 (easier music, lower notes, rarely crossing the break for woodwind players, and without key signatures for treble clef instruments). A piano part is included to help fill out the harmonies for smaller groups.

VIEW SCORE PDF This rousing and pulsating work by Kevin Norbury forms part of the suite A Renaissance Christmas, also published by BrookWright Music. It is based on three popular carols - In Dulci Jubilo, Good Christian men, rejoice! and Ding-dong merrily on high. This magnificent 13th-century melody was also a part of Michael Praetorius's collection. It is traditionally associated with the words 'Good Christian men, rejoice!' The opening is a straight transcription of the great chorale prelude for organ by J.S.Bach. After the grandeur of the opening, the tune is heard in more of a 'folky' style. A lot of related melodic material is then presented before the tune Ding-dong merrily on high is heard. After another episode of previously used music In Dulci Jubilo reappears in a joyful conclusion to the piece. A new John Rutter composition is The Colours of Christmas. The melody is beautiful in its simplicity, and the words are descriptive of the holiday spirit. This arrangement is written and intended for combined Wind Band and Chorus. However, it is also arranged so that it is complete with Wind Band alone. The scoring is done with some cue size notations that should be played if performing without the chorus. This will make a delightful addition to any Christmas or seasonal concert. The choral part is shown in the conductor's score, but is not a part of the set.

O come, O come Emmanuel is a Christian hymn for Advent and Christmas. It is a translation of a Latin hymn, Veni, veni, Emmanuel, itself a metrical paraphrase of the O Antiphons, a series of plainchant antiphons attached to the Magnificat at Vespers over the final days before Christmas. The 1861 translation from Hymns Ancient and Modern is the most prominent by far in the English-speaking world, but other English translations also exist., Translations into other modern languages (particularly German) are also in widespread use. This arrangement for Concert/Wind Band represents one in the series of band arrangements compatible with David Willcocks Carols for Choirs, Book 2 (#27).
