Nimrod is the name given to the ninth and best-known variation inEdward Elgar's Enigma Variations, an orchestral work of 14 variations on an original theme composed between 1898 and 1899. Each variation is also a portrait of one of 14 members of Elgar's family and circle of friends. A celebrated work, Nimrod is a portrait of Augustus Johannes Jaeger, who in addition to being his best friend was also Elgar's editor.The variations all represent a series of portraits and as such are entitled with a name or initials that identify the person. Biblically, Nimrod is a great hunter of the Old Testament, thus representing his muse through a play on words: Jger in German means 'hunter'. The melody appears to represent a nocturnal stroll during which the two discuss Ludwig van Beethoven's slow movements; the first eight bars, in fact, recall the beginning of the second movement of the Pathtique Piano Sonata.An arrangement of classical music signed by Franco Cesarini which stands out for its skilful and careful instrumentation.

Legend of a Giant is a composition for solo alto saxophone and Wind Band composed by the Belgian composer Kevin Houben. The composer dedicated this challenging saxophone concerto to the Spanish saxophone virtuoso Mariano Garcia.The work had its premire in May 2021 in the Lemmensinstitute with the Wind Band of the LUCA School of Arts in Leuven (Belgium) conducted by Ivan Meylemans.Mariano Garcia is a full time professor saxophone at the LUCA School ofArts, the Conservatorio Superior de Musica de Aragon in Zaragoza (Spain) and the Wiener Akademie Musik (Austria).As in any classical concerto the saxophone soloist 'competes' with the orchestra: first alternately, in dialogue witheachother, afterwards fraternally together. Moreover the orchestra is regarded as an equal partner, therefore also for the musicians of the orchestra this cinematic score presents a tough challenge.Legend of a giant immerses thelistener in the world of the saxophone and challenges the soloist in the field of lyricism and timbre, but also on a technical level. In this way various aspects and modern playing styles such as bisbigliandos, double staccato,frullatos, glissandos, harmonics of overtones,... pass in review. In a word: a tough 'challenge' for any saxophone virtuoso! (!) A simplified version of the saxophone solo part also exists.

Based on Alexander Dumas' adaptation of E. T. A. Hoffman's story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, the ballet premiered in December of 1892 in St. Petersburg, Russia. Tchaikovsky selected eight pieces from the ballet and created The Nutcracker Suite, which became an immediate success and to this day remains one of the most popular ballets, and contains some of the best-loved Christmas music. A cantastoria or Bnkelsnger German for busker was a travelling musician who made music in streets and squares, together with his colleagues. Die Bnkelsngerlieder (buskers songs) originally stem from the seventeenth century. Robert van Beringen, who is known for his attractive arrangements of classical melodies, created a colourful transcription for wind band based on this characteristic music.

Written in a single summer month while World War II was still raging in 1944, Prokofiev's Symphony No. 5 would become not only one of the composer's most celebrated and performed works, it would stand among the giants in all of 20th Century classical compositions. Cast in four movements, Prokofiev once gave a statement that he intended it as a hymn to free and happy Man, to his mighty powers, his pure and noble spirit. He added, I cannot say that I deliberately chose this theme. It was born in me and clamoured for expression. The music matured within me. It filled my soul. Deliberate or not, his statement likely helped placate the Communist Soviet Party, who under Stalin ruthlessly, and often fatally, censored the art and music of the time. Trois Rag-Caprices - Darius Milhaud
The French composer Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) was a member of the 'Groupe des Six'. This group of six composers gathering Honegger, Poulence, Auric, Durey, Tailleferre and Milhaud, imitated Erik Satie by revolting against the deeply rooted traditional conventions of that time. They reacted against impressionism (Debussy) and romanticism (Wagner, Mahler) and felt very strongly about the music of Satie and Strawinsky. Milhaud's most popular work is undoubtedly the ballet 'La Cration du Monde', one of the most striking examples of jazz influences in classical music. The premire at the 'Th?tre des Champs Elyses' in October 1923 caused a real scandal with the Paris public.The 'Trois Rag-Caprices' for piano were composed one year earlier, in the summer of 1922, and could be considered as a kind of preliminary sketch for 'La Cration du monde'. There are indeed clear similarities between both compositions as to the rhythmical and harmonic aspects. The 'Trois Rag-Caprices' were orchestrated for symphony orchestra by Milhaud himself some time later. The same happened to 'Saudades do Brasil' (1920), a piano composition punctuated with Latin-American influences, which was written after his stay in Rio de Janeiro (1917-18) exactly as his ballet 'Le Boeuf sur le Toit'. Johan de Meij's orchestration of 'Trois Rag-Caprices' for symphonic band is a most welcome addition next to the original band works of Milhaud, such as 'Suite Fran?aise' (1945) and 'West Point Suite' (1951).
