MUSINGS ON A PHRASE (Prestige Concert Band Extra Score) - Barry, Darrol

Extra Score. Musings opens with an unaccompanied oboe presenting the main theme which is a cipher o the name Paul Hindmarsh to whom this work is dedicated. Most of the ensuing music is based on this theme in one variant or another. whilst basically a set of variations, occasionally a motif will assume more importance in the following section, the main theme never being too far away. This music goes through many mood swings but finally the opening idea reveals itself agian and fades away on piccolo and glockenspiel. Performance time: 17'03" (Recorded on Polyphonic QPRM156D DOUBLES)

    New World Variations

David Shaffer 's most impressive work to date is based on the famous Largo ("Goin' Home") Section of Dvorak's New World Symphony. Contains magnificent writing that provides all sections of the band with equal chances to shine. Especially suited for bands in concert or contest, this exceptional tour-de-force for mature bands is destined to become an important and popular addition to the wind band repertoire. Very Highly Recommended!!

Solemnitas (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Cesarini, Franco

Each year on the last Monday in June, the German city of Burgdorf celebrates the holiday of youth, the so called 'Solennitat'. It is the most important event occurring in the city and consists of three processions walking through the centre of town to celebrate, at the city's expense, the good results achieved in school. This new work by Franco Cesarini takes it's inspiration from this event and leads us through contrasting variations of a Swiss folk tune.Duration: 12:15

SWORD AND THE CROWN, The (Prestige Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Gregson, Edward

In 1988 I was commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company to write the music for The Plantagenets trilogy, directed by Adrian Noble in Stratford-upon-Avon. These plays take us from the death of Henry V to the death of Richard III. Later, in 1991, I wrote the music for Henry IV parts 1 and 2, again in Stratford. All of these plays are concerned with the struggle for power (the crown) through the use of force (the sword) and they portray one of the most turbulent periods in the history of the British monarchy. This work quickly became established in the mainstream repertoire and has received performances worldwide as well as five commercial recordings and many broadcasts. In 2002 I was approached by the Parc and Dare Band regarding their summer festival and commissioned to do a version for brass band. This was given its first performance in Treorchy Hall by the combined bands of Black Dyke and Parc and Dare conducted by Nicholas Childs. When the Royal Air Force Music Services commissioned me to write a work especially for their British tour in 1991 I immediately thought of turning to this music and transforming some of it into a three-movement suite for symphonic band. The first movement opens with a brief fanfare for two antiphonal trumpets (off-stage), but this only acts as a preface to a Requiem aeternam (the death of Henry V) before changing mood to the English army on the march to France; this subsides into a French victory march, but the English army music returns in counterpoint. Finally, a brief reminder of the Requiem music leads to the triumphal music for Richard Plantagenet, Duke of York, father of Edward IV and Richard III (the opening fanfare transformed). The second movement takes music from the Welsh Court in Henry IV (part 1) which is tranquil in mood; distant fanfares foreboding battles to come are heard, but the folktune is heard three times in different variations and the movement ends as it began with alto flute and gentle percussion. The final movement starts with two sets of antiphonally placed timpani, drums and tam-tam, portraying the 'war machine' and savagery of battle. Trumpet fanfares and horn calls herald an heroic battle theme which, by the end of the movement, transforms itself into a triumphant hymn for Henry IV's defeat of the rebellious forces.- Edward GregsonPerformance time 13'54"Recorded on QPRM117D FESTIVAL OF MUSIC 1991, Massed Bands of the Royal Air ForceRecorded on QPRM120D THE SWORD AND THE CROWN, Central Band of the Royal Air Force'Finale' recorded on QPRM142D FESTIVAL OF MUSIC 2002, Massed Bands of the Royal Air Force)

The Engulfed Cathedral (Concert Band - Score and Parts)

Two principal folk-like melodies have been woven together in this little suite. After a brief brass opening a rich chorale is played by woodwinds followed by the development section using sharp accented rhythms. The themes and their variations are added individually as they build for an exciting full band climax.

The Silver Anchor (Concert Band - Score and Parts)

A set of variations on the familiar tune. The theme travels through various musical settings in the course of its "around-the-world" journey. ("British, German, Oriental and South-of-the-border.")An optional narrator part is included and can be quite effective, especially if performed using the different dialects.

Vranjanka (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Hesketh, Kenneth

Vranjanka (pronounced VRAHN-yahn-kah) means "From Vranje," a town in southern Serbia. It is loosely based on the traditional folksong ano Duo. The melody is extant in two versions, one in 7/8 and one in 3/4. The musical form of the piece starts with a fairly slow introductory section, a faster second section cast in a set of variations on the folksong. Vranjanka was commissioned by Timothy and Hilary Reynish in memory of their son William. Duration: 9.00

    Humperdinck Variations - Bert Appermont

After attending a performance of Hnsel und Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck, the composer decided to write a commissioned piece for 4 horns and concert band based on the beautiful melody "Abendsegen", as used in Engelbert's famous overture. The composition can be performed with three or four solo horns with cues in the others parts and in the band. This work can be played with the horn section of your own band; the two extra horn parts noted in the full score are optional and can be left out. This piece is a stunning challenge for your french horn section!
