Studio-Pop Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

Studio-Pop consists of five movements. The firstmovement, entitled Marching on a String, is anenergetic rock march in a modern rhythm. Next, the charming Dreaming of Summer has beencomposed in three-four time - which is quiteunusual in modern pop music. The inspiration forthe third movement, Chicken-Charley was a youngman selling chicken legs from a stall. His supple, dancing movements can be recognised in the music. The fourth movement, Candlelight is a modern, attractive ballad. Finally, Discoteca takes us along ona night visit to a Spanish discotheque. The typicallySpanish chords and the stirring, high-spirited rhythmprovide an exuberant closing to Studio-Pop. 0:04:15

Thames Journey (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Hess, Nigel

A 10-minute work which follows the journey of the Thames, from its origins as a few drops of water in Wiltshire to the point where it meets the open sea. Along the way, Hess draws upon many musical links along the Thames, such as an old Wiltshire melody, morris dancing in Oxfordshire, boating songs from Berkshire. With such rich and diverse sources of music across several counties and centuries, this has quite understandably become one of Hess's most popular wind band works to date.

The Dance Club Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

After the success of Dance Starters, a follow-up in the Flexible 4 Series was a must. Again, Peter Kleine Schaars composed four dances, in which he, by means of refreshing chords, uncomplicated rhythms and simple melody lines, takes youthful musicians to The Dance Club. There, they learn the cha-cha-cha, the rumba, disco dancing and an actual Oriental belly dance. Great fun for everyone. 0:05:00

The Legend of Flathead Lake Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

In Scotland, the monster of Loch Ness is a hot issue, but the American state of Montana enjoys a comparable phenomenon going by the name of Montana Nessie. In the western part of this remote state lies Flathead Lake: a lake of 45 kilometres /38 miles in lenght and 24 kilometres /15 miles breath. At several places, its depth exeeds 100 metres.Nessies discovery takes us back to the year 1889, when captain James Kerr aboard the passengership U.S.Grant was startled by a ship unknown to him suddenly approaching his vessel across Flathead Lake. However, it turned out not to be a ship but an undefinable animal of immense size. From that moment onwards, life would never be the same again in and around Flathead Lake. The composer was inspired by the story, and summarized the events into a symphonic poem, but from a surprising angle:that of the monster. The exiting opening allows us to follow the monster in its natural surroundings. The fast follow-up movement depicts Montana Nessie trotting and frolicking about the Montana woods and prairies. From its abode, it thorougly enjoys everything around it. This period abruptly ends in a short climax (Chimes). The solo for cor anglais marks a new period in the monsters life. The presence of people has a paralizing effect and the apprehensive atmosphere of the slow movement may be felt profoundly. The monster observes and mildly teases the ship. Abhor sounds force the ship to a withdrawal. The moving musical continuation depicts the triumphant monster dancing an ironic waltz. The monsters fear and anger at the intrusion of his freedom run through the piece like continuous threads, and develop into the works final theme. 12:00

Danceries (Set II) - Kenneth Hesketh

Danceries Set II was commissioned by Keith Allen and Birmingham Symphonic Winds, supported by PRS for Music Foundation and the RVW Trust. The world premire of this work was given by Birmingham Symphonic Winds, conducted by Keith Allen, at the CBSO Centre, Birmingham in 2011. This second set of Danceries continues the format established in Danceries (Set I), namely in using material taken from Playford's Dancing Master, a collection of folk and popular tunes published in the seventeenth century, to form the basis of an extended dance suite. In this set, the melodies have been more abstracted and project only a distant echo of their original forms, but as before, each movement is self-contained, colourful and direct, with its own distinct mood. The outer movements - Jennie's Bawbee and Peascod's Galliarda - share a use of driving percussion writing with a military air. Tom Tinker's Toye and Heart's Ease (movements two and three) are both settings of original melodies. All movements are more extended than in the first set, with a freer use and approach to the material; melodies now occur in various keys and are supported by a greater variety of harmonic colouring. The result is a richer, even more exhilarating set of dances. Danceries has come of age!
