Namase Rhapsody (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Van der Roost, Jan

Namase Rhapsody differs in several respects from most other concert works by Jan Van der Roost, with its impressive twists and turns and musical allusions to the work of John Adams. A first, minimalist movement, is followed by a lyrical and expressive second movement for various soloists in different ranges. The third movement sees a stark change of mood with a rigid metrical figure before a powerful and energetic close.Duration: 8:45

Call of the Valley (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Haan, Jacob

The inspiration for this three-part work goes back to the International European Youth Wind Music Festival, of which the patron has been Jacob de Haan several times. It begins in a festive march tempo, then sacred music, instrumental groups playing off stage and a little march for brass and flutes. The third movement is a parade in which the various sections of the ensemble head towards the stage from different directions. Even without the effective choreography of the musicians, Call of the Valley is an impressive concert band composition.Duration: 5:15

Forge Ahead! (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Mier, Shirley

Beginning with a celebratory fanfare, followed by a hushed yet animated melody in the clarinets, the music intensifies, growing in excitement and volume while exploring different themes and sounds as various instrument groups are highlighted. Music (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Miles, John - Kernen, Roland

In his most famous number, Music, an ode to music, John Miles managed to pack in lots of different musical aspects and elements: rhythmically from slow to fast; dynamically from quiet to loud; and in the instrumentation between strings and rock band, he shows just what goes to make a piece of music and why it is that he loves this art form so much. This arrangement for a 10-part variable ensemble allows even musicians who don't have huge amounts of experience to discover and show their own passion for music.Duration: 5:30

Free Running (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Buckley, Robert

Free Running is an exciting, high velocity tour-de-force that will keep both musicians and the audience on the edge of their seats. Inspiration for the work came from the pointillistic paintings of Seurat (who created images by using tiny spots of primary colours on his canvas) and from Parkour, a form of urban acrobatics in which participants, known as free runners, use the structures of the rural landscape to perform catlike leaps and sprints. The resulting creation is a non-stop piece of music made up of only staccato notes in a constant rhythm moving through different sections of the ensemble. This is guaranteed to leave the audience breathless!Duration: 5:15

Five States of Change (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

Five States of Change was commissioned by Kunstfactor for the 4th section of the Dutch National Brass Band Championships (NBK) 2011. It is dedicated to Jappie Dijkstra and the Music Information Centre (MUI), Arnhem, Holland, in acknowledgement of their outstanding work in developing band repertoire. The composer writes:The idea for the piece came when I was reading an article about a branch of Chinese philosophy which is abbreviated as Wu Xing*, which has no exact translation but can mean, for example, five elements, five phases or five states of change. It is central to all elements of Chinese thought, including science, philosophy, medicine and astrology, and in simple terms tries to create various cyclic relationships between five elements in all walks of life. An example is: Earth - Metal - Water - Wood - Fire - (Earth) etc. where (in one cycle) earth bears metal, metal changes to liquid (water) when heated, water helps trees grow, wood burns to create fire, fire produces ash (earth) and the cycle continues. I was particularly interested in the cycle of emotions:- Meditation - Sorrow - Fear - Anger - Joy - (Meditation) etc. and thought this cyclic principle would provide an effective emotional journey for a piece of music. So Five States of Change has five equal sections which loosely characterise this emotional cycle. I have tried to make the music grow organically, with minimal repetition, and each movement evolves from the musical elements at the end of the previous one, with the opening material appearing, transformed, at the end of the piece to complete the cycle.*in full Wu zhong liu xing zhi chi or the five types of chi dominating at different times.- Philip SparkeDuration: 12:15

A Nottingham Festival (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

This celebratory work, which Philip Sparke wrote for the 20th anniversary of the Nottingham Concert Band, starts with a hymn-like theme played as a fanfare in the brass. With a change of mood from 'solemn' to 'merry' and back to 'majestic', together with an unusual orchestration, in which may different instruments feature and in which at points the entire wind orchestra shimmers in tutti passages, A Nottingham Festival is a real pleasure for musicians and public alike.Duration: 6:00
