Carol of the Shepherds (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

Carol of the Shepherds is based on the hymn tune 'Quem Pastores Laudavere' which dates back to the 14th century and is widely known throughout the Christian world. Although the melody has been set to a number of different texts in different countries it was originally a carol celebrating the Christmas story, in particular the visit of the Angel Gabriel to the shepherds.Duration: 2:50

Conzensus (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Van der Roost, Jan

This stately concert opener was originally written by Jan Van der Roost for a special event in which six respected wind orchestras (two Belgian and four Dutch) of different composition (two symphonic bands, two fanfare bands and two brass bands) were featured during six concerts. Each evening brought forth a performance by a symphonic band, a fanfare, and brass band, so that the audience could experience all three types of ensembles. This was indeed an original concept. The name, ConZEnSus, comes from a combination of the words, 'Concert Cyclus' (concert series) and 'zes' (Dutch for 'six'). This leads to a new word, which refers to 'consensus'. The general tenor of the cycle is thus immediately indicated. The richness of colour of the various ensembles is revealed through an open and friendly atmosphere. During all six concerts (over a span of three years), ConZEnSus functioned as a permanent opening number for each orchestra. Thus the same musical story was portrayed in three different packages.Duration: 2:30

Celebration Prelude (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Johnson, Stuart

Celebration Prelude opens with a 30 bar fanfare for brass and percussion and makes this Prelude ideal for a ceremonial or formal occasion, but the piece is equally suitable as a concert-opener. The fanfare theme is then developed in the woodwinds and taken up by the whole wind band, appearing in different guises and with different counter-melodies. Finally, the opening is restated in a much shorter form by the whole band playing fortissimo.

    Temperamental (Concert Band) Fendall Hill

This work by Fendall Hill was the set test for the 2021 National Brass Band Championships of New Zealand, B Grade. Here it has been adapted for Concert Band. The composer writes: 'J.S. Bach (1685-1750) is deemed by many to be the 'Ulimate Composer'. He added an incredible proportion to the DNA of western music, and his influence is heard in the music of today. Like many artists, he was not overly recognised as a composer during his lifetime, and it took an 1829 performance of the St Matthew Passion by Mendelssohn to ignite a recognition of his place in the music world, a place he has maintained ever since. This piece starts with a similar spark of rediscovery of the music of Bach. It contains arrangements of various works, interspersed with composition based on Bach's chord structures, sections in the style of Bach, and original sections inspired by the moods created along the way. The first section explores the Toccata, and great organ works. This leads into an exploration of his choral works, and a finale based on the Preludes. The word 'Tempered' has different meanings, and all seem to apply to the music of Bach, and these appeal to the musical, engineering and spiritual aspects of my personal life. His music reaches to the humanity and divinity, it has strength, structure and order that creates frameworks in which incredible complexity reigns; and the complexity leads to a wildness, a kind of craziness that represents a range of human moods, and can change without warning. The same piece of music affects people in very different ways. I don't know if it's Bach's music, or us, but it can seem out of control and under control at the same time - the combination is highly temperamental. Karneval i Paris - Johan S. Svendsen

Johan Svendsen (1840-1911) composed "Carnival in Paris" in 1872, inspired by the energy and vibrancy of the Parisian carnival celebrations. The piece showcases a variety of moods and orchestral colours, ranging from jubilant and playful sections to more lyrical and elegant passages. It is a lively and colourful work that reflects Svendsen's skill in orchestration and his ability to capture vivid, festive atmospheres in music. In "Carnival in Paris", his Nordic musical roots meet the cosmopolitan influences he encountered while living and working in major European cities. The work has become one of Svendsen's most popular and is frequently performed in concert halls and festivals. About My Transcriptions for Wind Bands Ever since I started playing the clarinet at 8 or 9 years old in the school band "Blveisene" in my hometown of Gjvik, playing transcriptions of orchestral music has been a natural part of the repertoire. In regional bands, Norway's National Youth Band, and during my 10 years in a Military band, I played many such transcriptions. These transcriptions often included handwritten parts, masterfully crafted by colleagues in a time when music notation software didn't exist. Similarly, the scores were often incomplete, typically featuring just a solo clarinet part and condensed score in Bb. The transcriptions also contained parts for instruments like the Eb cornet and multiple tenor horns, but no saxophones, which made them less suitable for modern wind bands. The rise of many skilled Concert Bands and the increasing demands for scores and accessibility made me realize that someone needed to preserve this tradition. The reason I've transcribed these works is to ensure that you can play or conduct a repertoire that I believe has a rightful place in Norwegian Wind Band tradition. These transcriptions are my contribution to preserving some of the unique works in Norwegian music literature. Creating a transcription is a complex task, and I believe the score of "Carnival in Paris" is one of the most intricate I've undertaken. The first part of the process involves entering the entire orchestral score into music notation software. This is time-consuming and requires meticulous work. The next step is to check several editions to see if there are any discrepancies. Mistakes are often found in orchestral material, which can lead to further errors in the transcription. After that, I listen to many different recordings while following along with the score, paying attention to how different conductors emphasize balance and timbre. Gradually, I begin to note down passages I believe will work well for wind bands. One particular challenge in this piece is that the woodwinds and strings operate in the same register. In the original, the tonal difference between the strings and winds helps to clarify the individual musical lines. In the transcription, I've tried to address this by separating the lines, for example through octave adjustments, and highlighting them without compromising other aspects. I've also used some mallet percussion to broaden the tonal palette. There are countless decisions to be made to create a product that will hopefully allow future generations of wind band musicians to play this repertoire. - Stig Nordhagen -

La banda de los guajiros - Sverre Indris Joner

Guajira is both a term for a song form, where most people will recognize the song "Guajira Guantanamera," but also a Cuban word for farmer or fieldworker, as there are many of in the eastern Oriente province of Cuba where this rhythm originated. "La Banda de los guajiros" translates directly to "The Guajira Band."It is composed for wind orchestra by Sverre Indris Joner, who already in 1985 traveled to Cuba to learn the secrets of Caribbean music. The rhythms used in this piece are thoroughly explained in the textbook "Latinmusikkens ABC," which is also published by Noteservice/Norsk Musikkforlag. The piece uses traditional elements from Cuban music such as Guajira, Son Montuno, and Danzn, all falling under the genre of salsa. It is recommended that both conductor and percussionists familiarize themselves with the execution of the different rhythm patterns. Instruments like congas and timbales particularly have a range of different rhythm patterns. The role of the guiro instrument cannot be underestimated. Despite its seemingly simple content, it is the glue that holds everything together!

    Fragments - Georges Sadeler

The work "Fragments" is an extremely powerful and energetic Concertino for trombone, full of different tonal colours and based on two motifs that are broken down into their fragments and processed further. The slightly playful main motif is presented by the soloist after an imposing introduction and gradually develops jazzy elements without abandoning the contemporary spirit. Throughout the work, the last three notes of the introductory motif are presented both as a short, shrill fragment and as a lyrical theme, which supports the constant alternation between leggero and marcato. An ostinato, which is carried through all registers, gives the work the necessary drift and serves as a common thread to connect the different parts."Fragments" was commissioned by the Luxembourg Ministry of Culture in collaboration with the "De klenge Maarnicher Festival" and was a compulsory piece for the final round of the "1st Michel Becquet International Trombone Competition".

    Pinazo - Saül Gómez Soler

Assignment from the "Casino Musical de Godella" to commemorate the centenary of the painter Ignacio Pinazo. The work does not attempt to add music to any of our author's paintings, but it takes different pictorial resources as a metaphor for the different sections. The quick layout of his brushstrokes is reflected in the most frantic passages of music. The earthy colors in the darkest sonorities and the typical colors of impressionism reflected in the sonorities of French musical impressionism.
