Felicien Doyen, the President of the Tornacum Royal Choir Circle of Tournai (Belgium) and a close friend of the composer commissioned this Mass. Missa Tornacum was originally composed for mixed choir and organ, gave a memorable performance of the piece in the Chartres Cathedral in France.Although it does not include the Credo, the work is composed according to the traditional structure of a Mass in five parts : Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, Agnus Dei, and Ite missa est. En the first two parts, a dialogue is created between the choir and the band. It is followed by the Sanctus cycle ("Sanctus" - "Hosanna" - "Benedictus"), which is remarkable for the contrasts between the tone colours characterising each of its three parts. The fourth part, Agnus Dei, takes on a tone of serene intimacy. A free counterpoint draws this section to a close by fading into an almost imperceptible quietness. Ite missa est begins with a series of imitations, which develop into a majestic and cheerful passage marking the end of the Mass. Choir parts are available separately.Duration: 17:00

This hymn was commissioned by "Antwerpen 93". And this city, on the banks of the river Schelde has been nominated "Cultural Capital of Europe" for 1993. The work-group "animatie" took the initiative and commissioned a hymn, which -as the finale to a grand open-air event on 27th March- was premired by hundreds of musicians from all over Europe. Philippe Langlet (France) was the conductor at this majestic occasion. Musically speaking the piece can no doubt be labelled easy. Indeed it is meant to represent a hymn, playable by all in different instrumental combinations. Consequently a variable instrumentation was chosen and a type of music, which by native is easily accessible and uncomplicated. The conductor is free -in the instrumentation- to score this piece according to his own taste. It is perhaps advisable to use the sharp brass in the forte parts, in order to make the range in the sound of the orchestra as colourful as possible. The percussion parts are not absolutely essential, so that the hymn can also be performed without percussion.Duration: 4:00

Harrie Janssen composed Analecta Varia in memory of Henk van Lijnschooten (1928-2006). He has been of great influence on the Dutch music for wind instruments. As a conductor and as a member of the jury, but above all as a prominent composer. Consists of eight sound studies that can also be performed separately. In each part a particular orchestral aspect is the central point. The eight parts 1. Choral: ensemble in monophonic texture. 2. Air: relatively free line patterns combined with a constant pulse. 3. Pavana: constant rhythmicity culminating in an orchestral tutti. 4. Lullaby: dissonant harmony above an organ point in a filigree instrumentation. 5. Bulgarian Dances is a free rhapsody, divided into four distinct movements based on famous Bulgarian folk songs. These songs have a very old tradition and stem from both the antique world of Byzantium and even earlier in the ancient and mysterious civilization of the Thrace region. In the beginning they were monodic songs, then diaphonic, with characteristic dissonances of major and minor seconds which make them unique. What also makes these songs so fascinating are seductive and complex irregular rhythms. The composer, while remaining faithful to the original spirit of the songs, has not hesitated to broaden the musical ideas, enriching them and making them more suitable to the rich palette of colours of contemporary concert bands. Extra Score. This suite - originally a brass band work - was commissioned jointly by the Black Dyke Band and the Brass Band Heritage Trust. The composer later made this version for concert band. The work is intended to be played without a break but divides naturally into three sections. Each section is based upon a traditional Welsh melody treated in free variation manner, respectively Gwyr Harlech (Men of Harlech), Suo-Gan (Cradle Song) and Codiad Yr Hedydd (The Rising of the Lark).
