    Festive Dances - Robert Thurston

Robert Thurston's enormously attractive writing for band and his sure command of contemporary harmonic and rhythmic devices give this three movement composition by terrific band and audience appeal. Thurston's fondness for mixed meters will keep players on their toes. The 2nd movement (moderato) in particular has a memorable folk-like lilt and charm. The whole piece is bound together by the use of the motto C-E-C, the initials of the composer's teacher, the late great band writer Charles E. Carter, in whose memory Festive Dances was written. Duration: 7'

The Festive Season - Paul Curnow

Colorful lights, shining candles, sparkling bulbs, gifts beautifully wrapped and friends coming to visit. And with the friends come music, merry singing and joyous carols resounding through the house. When you think about and sing along to Good King Wenceslas and God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen, you can scarcely sit still. Then when Jingle Bells is heard, it seems as though you should stand and dance while singing. It is the Festive Season!

A Festive Tribute - Johann Sebastian Bach

A Festive Tribute is an arrangement of a splendid chorus whichBach first used in the secular Cantata 207 of 1726, but is perhapsbetter known in its later version, which appears in Cantata 207a, thedescriptively titled Auf, schmetternde Tne der muntern Trompeten, which cannot be adequately translated but means something alongthe lines of 'let the trumpets sound'. While the lyrics are perhaps alittle obsequious, much of the music for this cantata is celebratoryand lushly scored for a large orchestra including trumpets, oboesd'amore and flutes, making it an ideal piece for a concert bandarrangement.

    Festive Winds - Etienne Crausaz

Festive Winds begins with a short introduction before we hear a light, airy and fresh-sounding passage. The original character of this march is above all in the trio, which conjures up the sounds of a big band with its bluesy style. The work was commissioned by the Socit Cantonale des Musiques Vaudise to celebrate the 27th festival of the French canton of Vaudois in Savigny, Switzerland, where the march was given its premire by a mass ensemble.

    Festive Overture - Dimitri Shostakovich

Festive Overture was composed in 1954 to commemorate the 37th birthday of the October Revolution of 1917. With this overture Shostakovich shows his brighter side, in contrast to his melancholy 10th symphony written in the previous year. The premiere of this piece took place on November 6, 1954 at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. Shostakovich makes great use of different themes which he alternates and intermingles in a masterly way. This skilful transcription by Tohru Takahashi retains all the grandeur of the original.

A Festive Overture - Kenneth Hesketh

A Festive Overture is bravura in nature, with important solos for upper winds and trumpets. The outer sections are busy and colourful and frame a more expansive, but no less urgent, middle section which develops a large arching oboe and clarinet theme. The work ends as it began, with excitement and exuberance.
