The Wind in the Willows (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Meij, Johan
A book for those who keep the spirit of youth alive in them; of life, sunshine, running water, woodlands, dusty roads, winter firesides, said author Kenneth Grahame (1859-1932) about his children's book The Wind in the Willows. Initially, he wrote the stories about Ratty, Mole, Badger and Toad to read to his visually handicapped son Alistair, but after the publication in book form in 1908, it became a worldwide success. It was later also turned into a film and a television series. What appealed ti the composer most is the friendly, very cosy atmosphere that Grahame has managed to create with his optimistic narrative style full of high spirits, an atmosphere that reminds thecomposer of his own carefree youth. It was therefore a great pleasure to set this book to music! The four movements successively describe: I) The River- The river, which flows through the habitat of the animals like a lifeline, regularly is the scene of pleasant boat trips and picnics. The animals lead their untroubled lives here. The four-tone main motif [A-C-D-C] is extensively presented by the brass section, and returns in the following movements as a countermelody. II) Ratty and Mole -The bright, energetic Rat and the melancholy doubter Mole are inseparable friends and have many adventures. Their opposite characters are illustrated by separate musical themes. III) Mister Toad - The wilful, haughty Mister Toad is indeed a unique case: time after time, he runs into tricky situations, and with his indomitable passion for fast, preferably stolen, cars he causes quite a lot of damage... IV) The Return of Ulysses - After Toad Hall, the majestic residence of Mister Toad, is recovered from the weasels and stoats of the Wild Wood, who had captured the estate in a cowardly way, our friends get ready for a banquet. They celebrate the victory with a triumphant parade, and so both the book and the music conclude with a happy ending. Duration: 17.00

For the Next Thousand (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Schwarz, Otto M.
Perhaps a strange characteristic, but mankind has always had a fear of changing centuries and millennia. The end of the world and all kind of natural catastrophes has been forecasted, but have never come to pass. In For The Next Thousand composer Otto Schwarz tries to be more positive. In this piece he makes a toast to the new age, in which wind music too has to find a new way of staying attractive. The piece has elements of film music and has a slow-rock middle section, with a sax solo.Duration: 5:45

Fantasy Tales (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Swerts, Piet
This work, reminiscent of a film score, describes the history of the Dutch town Horn. A broad lyrical theme, played by the horns, depicts the history of this town on the river Meuse. A cheerful Allegro represents rural life around the town and its castle. Following this the horn theme returns and the music changes dramatically. A drum roll symbolises the times of war that the town and castle have known. The threatening music eventually develops once more into the hopeful horn theme, a sign of reconstruction and the future.Duration: 10:45

Utopia (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Haan, Jacob
Utopia is the name of a book written by the English author Thomas More and was published in 1516. The title is a word thought up by More himself, after the Greek language, meaning "Nowhereland" and leading to the invention of the words utopian scheme and utopian. Utopia pictured an ideal state on an island far from the inhabited world. This idea was the basis of the composition. It makes one think of Oregon in variety of themes and style. Utopia also exists of a combination of styles that breathe the atmosphere of film music. However, Utopia sounds less American. The slow and stirring middle part for example is closer to the European romanticism: the chord signals in the brass section remind of Wagner's music.Duration: 11:30

Bilbo the Hobbit Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
Originally written by the great English writer J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973), The Lord of the Rings has encountered new-found popularity recently with the release of three ?huge-hit? motion pictures. With Bilbo the Hobbit we enter the lands of Middle-earth during the Third Age, some decades before The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Fascinated by the works of the masters of film music, Maxime Aulio structured this work in their way. When the end credits roll, Maxime?s music displays all the basic characters and passages of the novel. From the landscapes of the Shire to Middle-earth, the Great Dragons to Gandalf the Wizard, Bilbo Baggins tells us his story through light and virtuoso arabesques in the solo part. Bilbo the Hobbit is a wonderful addition to the french horn repertoire and one to be a sure-fire hit with horn players everywhere.

Let Me Weep Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
Film music is usually written to match the action in a scenario. Sometimes the opposite is true as is proved by Jacob de Haan's piece La Storia. Written for creative musicians and audiences, the listener is given the opportunity of making up his own story to fit the music, without even the restriction of composer's comments. 0:03:15
