    Earhart - Robert W. Smith

The legend of Amelia Earhart continues to capture the imaginations of aviators and historians worldwide. Earhart, a pioneer in aviation and in women's rights, began her final journey in the United States and crossed multiple continents. Robert W. Smith has drawn upon Earhart's final flight to create this unique musical composition. Following the opening "takeoff," the composer was inspired by the indigenous sounds of the various continents in Earhart's flight path. From a unique fugue inspired by the music of Central and South America to a lyrical statement from the Dark Continent, the listener is transported on a musical journey that will capture the imagination. Following a dark and powerful percussion statement with Asian overtones, the journey ends not in tragedy but in celebration as the original flight theme returns. An excellent choice for any concert setting!

    Symphonic Overture - Charles Carter

Symphonic Overture is a contemporary-sounding overture of medium difficulty so scored that it can be performed with equal success by large and small groups alike. Employing the familiar three-part form (A-B-A), the opening section has a theme which is robust in character and with considerable rhythmic interest. The second theme, slow and expressive in character is a free form based on an opening idea introduced by the first flute. At the return of the first section, the first theme is treated as a fugue subject building to great heights as all four entrances are achieved. As the exposition concludes, the contrapuntal texture gives way to a homophonic quality which closes the piece. The coda, as is characteristic, utilizes material from the first theme.

Between the Two Rivers - Philip Sparke

Between the Two Rivers was commissioned by Fanfare 'Prins Hendrik', from Aalst in the Netherlands. The title derives from the fact that the town of Aalst lies between two tributaries of the River Dommel. The community is a highly religious one, so the famous Luther chorale, Ein' Feste Burg, was an obvious choice for Philip Sparke to use as the theme for this new work. It takes the form of a theme with four contrasting variations. Variation 1 is a moto perpetuo, variation 2 has a slower march like feel, variation 3 is a sinister slow movement and the final variation is in the form of a lyrical fugue. Between The Two Rivers is sure to become a major work in modern concert bandrepertoire.

Concerto for Horn and Band - Bert Appermont

Concerto for Horn and Band was written on commission from the horn player Miguel Martinez Megias and the symphonic concert band La Armnica from Buol, Spain. This four-movement work, written to fully explore the capabilities of the hornas a solo voice, is comprised of a dramatic Sarabande, a highly virtuoso Toccata, a wonderful Romance and a Finale that reworks the second movement in a kind of fugue and brings the work to a spectacular close. The basicbuilding block of this concerto, quite fittingly, is the fifth: you only have to think of the post horn or a hunting theme, which conjures up the sound of the perfect fifth. Wonderful new repertoire for a wonderful instrument.

Ouverture To The Three Angels - Jelle Tasseyns

This overture was written in 2000 and pays homage to the composer Paul Hindemith. The composition is based on "Es sungen drei Engel. The song dates back to the 12th century and was originally a Christmas carol. Mahler used this melody in his 'Des Knaben Wunderhorn' and in the finale of his third symphony. Paul Hindemith also uses this melody as a chorale in the 'Engelkonzert' of his 'Mathis der Maler' symphony. This melody is not only used extensively in the 'Overture to The Three Angels', it also forms the main theme of the entire central piece. In this central piece, the melody can first be heard as a fugue by the woodwind instruments and then by the brass instruments andultimately ends in a grand tutti which features all the themes of the entire work. The first and the last part of the composition are not based directly on the chorale melody but constitute a contemporary commentary of the central part. These are not literal references but rather the sounds of the heralds.

    Catedrales - Bert Appermont

Cathedrals have always appealed to the imagination. Hundreds of years of manpower have been invested in their building and it is not for nothing that today they represent imposing symbols of architecture and history. The cathedral is also a great source of inspiration for compositions, drawing on a full palette of acoustic echo effects, Gregorian melodies and organ based choral themes. The work "Catedrals" opens with a five tone motif using double tonguing which resonates through space. Then comes a Gregorian antiphonal theme "Salve Regina" which is heard in the euphonium and later combines with the opening motif. The quicker passage that follows is basedentirely on the intervals in the motif which by now has added rhythmic variations and develops in different forms, including a fugue. The work then builds towards its first climax, from which unusual muted sounds emerge creating an atmosphere shrouded in mystery.Gradually, more melodious fragments are added to the Gregorian antiphonal theme which develops into an expansive choral, emulating the organ and which rises above the sound mass. The work grows more powerful and brilliant in sound until it culminates in a short and explosive finale wherein elements from the whole work come together.

    Jubilant Prelude - Toon Hagen

'Jubilant Prelude' is an orchestration of the 'Preludium over Psalm 150' originally composed for organ by Toon Hagen. Since 1998 Toon Hagen has been organ-player of the 'Grote or Sint Michalskerk' in Zwolle (the Netherlands). He has written several 'contemporary' compositions for organ.'Jubilant Prelude' has a capricious character by the use of irregular measures and its many measure changes. The structure of the Prelude is that of a fugue and is based on motives from the psalm. After the first climax, which is both dynamic and harmonic, the theme in the Andante Jubiloso is clearly audible and it is alternated with erratic motifs. Tension increases until at last the psalm itself isheard in all its glory. The melody of the psalm sounds as a cantus firmus in tenor register, with motifs in ornamentation for saxophones, bugles and trumpets. The finale, like the prelude is capricious and vehement. The instrumentation for concert band was made by Wim Rouw. It is particularly colourful and has a surprising role for the percussion section.

Pavana: constant rhythmicity culminating in an orchestral tutti. 4. Lullaby: dissonant harmonyabove an organ point in a filigree instrumentation. 5. Chaconne: color and virtuosity combined with a rigid pasacaglian theme. 6. Interlude: antithesis woodwind/brass and followed by a synthesis of the before. 7. Fugue: ensemble in a polyphonic texture. 8. Epilogue: final canto in a preponderating strong dynamic, where a constant euphony has to be pursued.
