Northland Saga
This imaginative tone picture uses the Russian folk song, 'Meadowlands,' to evoke images of armies marching across the frozen territories of the North. The music opens quietly with snare drum and clarinets. Soon other instruments join in, as the armies approach each other, culminating in a battle scene that effectively utilizes the percussion section. The battle concludes and the armies depart, gradually disappearing into the snow. Great for developing imagery. (Grade 2)
