Harlequin - Bruce Broughton
Harlequin is the most popular of the comic servant characters from the Italian commedia dell'arte who, although a slow thinker, was acrobatic and nimble - he would never perform a simple action when the addition of a cartwheel or backflip would spice up the movement! These characteristics are aptly portrayed musically in Bruce Broughton's mini concert overture. Originally published for brass band in 1984, this revised version for wind band coveys all the hustle, bustle, and agility of the character in a finely crafted musical structure. Ideal as a concert opener or encore it is sure to delight audiences and provide players with an exciting new addition to their repertory. Duration: 3 minutes USA Grade 4+

Error Detection - Student's Edition - Robert Spradling
The Error Detection: Exercises for the Instrumental Conductor texts are designed to improve the critical listening skills of the conducting student through real music excerpts that contain planted errors in the parts for the conductor to find. Both books contain 54 excerpts from standard band literature from grades 2 to grade 6 so students gain knowledge of real music they can use later, not just non-musical etudes. The teacher's edition contains over 350 pages of materials with analysis sheets and answer keys to help the conducting teacher to easily evaluate the student's progress. The teacher's edition also comes with a CD-ROM containing all of the instrumental parts for all of the musical excerpts as PDF files, so the teacher can just print the amount of parts needed for each example, and the examples are arranged to sound satisfying with as little as five players. The Error Detection program has been tested for over 3 years at major university programs like the University of Minnesota, Illinois State University, and the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati.

Where Mountains Touch the Sky - Robert Buckley
With sensitive scoring and use of colors and textures, this descriptive piece sounds more advanced and sophisticated than its grade level would suggest. Where Mountains Touch the Sky is a tone poem inspired by springtime in thealpine meadows of British Columbia. While the lofty peaks are still covered with snow, the rivers are flowing and the meadows are coming alive with wildflowers. This lyrical work begins quietly and peacefully, building steadily toa soaring climax before returning to a soft and reverent conclusion. Dur: 3:00

Seconds Out - Samuel R. Hazo
In boxing, the term seconds out refers to the moment when coaches and trainers (or seconds) must be out of the ring, leaving the competitors alone to face the competition. In a similar vein, this composition provides a musicaldescription of the challenges and triumphs of students as they transition from middle to high school, leaving their seconds (parents, mentors, etc.) behind to face life on their own terms. Featuring a strong sense of urgencythroughout, Seconds Out is solidly written for inexperienced ensembles with plenty of tutti scoring, and interspersed with sections of contrasting dynamics and effective percussion writing. (Grade 2) Dur: 3:50

Oxford Pointe - Ed Huckeby
Features the appealing melodies, exciting rhythms, and solid scoring that you have come to expect from Ed Huckeby. After an effective Maestoso introduction, the bright Allegro really punches out the main theme. The contrasting Andante section in 3/4 has a beautiful melody first presented in the upper woodwinds and then later with the full ensemble. Huckeby's previous pieces at this grade level have been extremely well received and "Oxford Pointe" is certainly one of his nicest efforts to date.

Cloud Nine - Lauren Bernofsky
This spirited work, in 3/4, maintains a quick tempo throughout. The opening, rhythmic motif builds steadily before the full band states the main theme. A lightly scored middle section leads into a restatement of the beginning material. A wonderful piece to challenge your group, as Lauren makes use of some independent lines while staying well within the grade level.

Basses Are Aces - Joseph Compello
Designed by a master offeriting for this grade level, Bases Are Aces was written to encourage the low brass and woodwind players, while still being fun for the whole band to play. A great recruitment piece, it will motivate the frequently overlooked members of the low instrument contingent, who anchor the band. Some simple syncopations, such as a spoken line by the other members of the band ("How low can you go?") and a brief, repeated, "cadenza," add to the fun of this clever piece. Duration: 3' 10"
