Battle of Hearts - Bert Appermont
The source of inspiration for this work was the play Das Kthchen von Heilbronn (Katie of Heilbronn), which was written by Heinrich von Kleist in 1810. The music evokes the underlying drama, tensions and emotions of the characters involved: "The Blacksmith's Daughter", "Kunigunde", "The Fire" and "The Emperor's Daughter". The title 'Battle of Hearts' refers to the two women from the story (Kthchen and Kunigunde), who both fight to win the heart of Count Von Strahl. This is an impressive, non programmatic but strong thematic work suitable for concerts or contests. This work was commissioned by Blserjugend Kreisverband Heilbronn.

Steps Ahead - Michael Gandolfi
Steps Ahead is a work by Michael Gandolfi that takes young players on a journey! Along the way, there are musical elements that are intended to educate the performers about basic compositional techniques that are intended to educate the performers about basic compositional techniques. Steps Ahead is a delightful piece with something interesting for every instrument in the ensemble. Each of its three sections addresses a kind of compositional technique - transposition, tutti (a 2-part homophonic section) and developing tutti (parts of the band enter to build to a 2-part homophonic tutti). Less experienced players might enjoy the challenges of easy syncopation and musical lines constructed with larger intervals. -Tom Duffy, series editor. Spy Ring - Richard L. Saucedo
Under orders from General George Washington at the height of the Revolutionary War, a spy ring was organized for the purpose of providing critical information on the movement of British forces in the New York area. This dynamicwork for band hints at the sense of danger and intrigue at the heart of this operation. The opening strains are propelled by an underlying rhythmic layer with flashes of color from the winds and percussion. A reflective middlesection features soloistic passages with lush harmonies, and offers a calming mood before the fast tempo returns for the dynamic finish. Dur: c. 7:45 (MusicWorks)

Eye of the Hawk - Susan Botti
Eye of the Hawk was inspired by the beautiful and majestic Hudson Valley. I wanted to base the piece on something that would resonate with the band who would be premiering it ... my local, exceptional, middle school band. The hawkbecame our spirit animal, and represented to me many of the qualities that are inherent in a young person of that age - bold, instinctive, elegant - a fierce creature who owns the sky. The music conveys power, freedom, andconfidence. Just like the students. -Susan Botti.
