Nature's Way - Gunther Schuller
From the composer: Nature's Way for intermediate level band was commissioned by BandQuest, a project initiated by the American Composers Forum. Their mission is for major composers of national reputation to write works of high quality that take into consideration the (still comparatively limited) levels of musical development--both technical and conceptual--typical of such ensembles. I eagerly accepted the commission and the challenges implied thereby--that is, to reign in my creative imagination to some extent and limit the technical/conceptual demands to a more moderate level than is to be found in my previous compositions for band. Nonetheless, since the process of rehearsing, studying and performing a work created specifically for the school student market is--and must be, in my view--primarily educational, it was very clear to me that my work would (and should) challenge the players at least to their top levels, and even a little beyond that. Thus Nature's Way in no way represents a compromise of my personal style, nor my long held concepts of form, continuity, texture, and instrumentation. I have known for a long time that young, inquisitive minds are eager to learn from new experiences, from previously never encountered challenges, that is to say, to be pushed--gently--to rise above their present levels of achievement. That's what education is all about. BandQuest, an exciting series of new music and accompanying curricula for band, is a program published by the American Composers Forum. The series was started as a response to feedback from music educators that there is a pressing need for new, fresh band music. The heart of this program is new works written by a diverse group of leading American composers who have created challenging pieces that are a true departure from standard middle school repertoire. Every BandQuest project includes a residency component in which the composer works collaboratively with a middle school as they create their new piece. Many BandQuest pieces are accompanied by an interdisciplinary curriculum designed to assist students as they learn the music and to integrate each piece with non-music studies. Ghost Walk - Chris Brubeck
Composer Chris Brubeck wrote Ghost Walk as part of his BandQuest residency at West Rocks Middle School in Connecticut. The piece combines Brubeck's lifelong experiences with both jazz and classical idioms, creating a work that's as fun to play as it is to hear. The title was inspired by the wedding of Brubeck's son at Gettysburg College, which hosts a ghost walk, as well as the minor mode and haunting atmosphere of the piece. Learn more on YouTube! Nonantum Bulgar - Hankus Netsky
Adding to the minuscule number of Klezmer pieces for concert band, Nonantum Bulgar is the 20th piece published in the BandQuest series. The title, Nonantum Bulgar, refers to Nonantum, a district in Newton which is home to the city's oldest synagogue (on the National Register of Historic Places), and bulgar (pronounced 'bull-ghar'), a type of Klezmer dance. When writing the piece, the composer imagined the dedication of the Adams St. Shul, which took place over one hundred years ago and featured a prominent Boston cantor and choir and a klezmer orchestra leading a Grand March down Adams St. This upbeat work is fun to play, features a trumpet solo, and gives every instrument the opportunity to play the melody. Caleidoscopio - Lorenzo Pusceddu
The incommunicability between different cultures and worlds and the confusion that this generates lie at the heart of this work: the fanfare-like themes that characterise the introduction, together with the "Arabian" melodies of the Presto, represent these differences. The bare theme of the Andante, while offering a glimpse of hope, also describes the impossibility of a meeting and the pain this situation causes. The empty fifth and dissonance of the minor second are elements that feature throughout this work. In the Coda, moreover, all these ideas reappear "kaleidoscopically", amidst a convulsive and excitingly chaotic atmosphere.

Mountain Majesty - Franco Cesarini
For someone like Franco Cesarini, who was born and raised in a land where every horizon is dominated by the majestic Alps, mountains are in one's heart and soul every moment of life. The true spirit of mountains is described in the words of Alan Hovhaness: "Mountains are symbolic meeting places between the material and the spiritual world." It is a sentiment with which the composer fully agrees, which also helps explain the titles of succeeding episodes of the composition. These episodes alternate moments of reality, of matter, and with those of the ethereal, the spirit. Mountain Majestic is the fascinating final movement from the epic work Poema Alpestre, published separately inthis edition for concert band. Breath a breath of fresh mountain air into your concert with this emotive work.
