In Quiet Times - James Swearingen
This beautiful ballad offers plenty of opportunities for focusing on musicality with little concern for technical demands. The humble melody in the clarinets and horn is answered first by flutes then trumpets, before the glorious key change. As beautifully as it began, the piece fades back to a quiet time. Sure to work with virtually any instrumentation, and a truly musical experience! (2:00)

Les Marteaux de la Marine - Rob Goorhuis
Les Marteaux de La Marine was composed in 1999 as a commission by the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy. The composition contains three static elements which interchange. Static in this case means that development of the material isnot pursued (by the composer). The first element with which the piece begins is tranquil and colourful. The second element is sharp and incisive, while the third expresses energy. In all elements a repeated tone is the starting point whichexplains the hammers in the works title. The instrumentation is richly variegated with a harp also determining the palette of colours in the slower movements. The composition opens with an atmospheric Larghetto containing fine harmonies in thesoft and subtly moving wood-winds. The introduction breathes an impressionistic atmosphere in which expressive cantilenas and soloistic agile motifs stand out. A strong setting is followed by an Allegro virtuoso containing fast motifs contrasted withshort and rhythmic stars of the various instrumental sections. Trumpets and horns add a virtuoso bugle-call motif. After a short stringendosection, the transparent Larghetto returns with a varied setting of the opening elements. The beautifulleading roles in this section are reserved for cornet (trumpet) and horn. Subsequently, the flashing Vivo starts with continuous movements in triplets from both wood-winds and brass. Next, the opening Allegro re-appears once again and thus LesMarteaux de la Marine ends with a fast and virtuoso climax. Les Marteaux de La Marine was selected as a compulsory grade 6 contest piece for symphonic bands in the Netherlands.

Vulcan - Michael Daugherty
(2014) Vulcan for Concert Band is Grammy award winning composer Michael Daugherty's first work for the high school and intermediate level college band. The work is a colorful homage to Gene Roddenberry's interstellar universe as depicted in the classic American television series Star Trek (1966-69). The title refers to the fiery planet Vulcan, home world of half-human, half-Vulcan Mr. Spock. As the rational-minded science officer aboard the starship Enterprise (commanded by the hot-blooded Captain James T. Kirk), Mr. Spock grapples with the fascinating predicament of making decisions predicated on human emotion versus Vulcan logic. Daugherty has composed stirring, yet highly structured music that alludes to the Vulcan Pon Farr ritual, Vulcan telepathic mind-melds, and the volcanic planet itself. At the the Ann Arbor, Michigan world premiere (utilizing the combined forces of the Pioneer, Huron and Skyline High School bands), Vulcan was an immediate hit and will surely become one of Daugherty's most performed works. Instrumentation The number of players doubling each part is at the conductor's discretion, but should be in keeping with a balanced sound. Wild Rose Jamboree - Robert Buckley
Wild Rose Jamboree conjures up the pioneer spirit and the big-sky panorama of Alberta, Canada's heartland. The cinematic approach to the music captures the essence of life in wild rose country - famous for its rodeos, warm-hearted people, majestic mountains and wide-open spaces. With a high-spirited hoedown and a rich, reverent theme that features a trumpet solo and a flute/clarinet duet, this composition could be a dynamic show opener or festival piece. Wild Rose Jamboree can be effectively performed by a mixed group (junior band and senior band, for example), the upper parts being at a medium level and the lower parts (flute 2, clarinet 3, alto saxophone 2, trumpet 3, horn 2 and trombone 2) at an easier level.
