Composer Robert Spittal was moved to complete this work in response to the Newtown, Connecticut tragedy in 2012, and serves as a reflection of our complicated feelings of grief and loss. The music is simple and direct, and meant as a hopeful work for young players. Moved by a metaphor describing the victims as "twenty-six new diamonds in the sky", the title is a reference to the stars which we look upward to for inspiration, for hope, and to dream of better things to come.

Symphony for the Future was originally a soundtrack written for a multimedia spectacle with film, light and laser effects. The soundtrack, which initially consisted of 4 parts, was played live by a symphonic orchestra and a pop group, in sync with the screening of a film. The assignment was to reflect a message of hope and positive enthusiasm for the future, using music and film as a mixed media. In this arrangement for wind instruments, the 4 parts come together seamlessly. Jan Rypens has succeeded in producing an excellent orchestration of the piece.

Cast in a rollicking 6/8 meter, the first theme in D minor signifies determination and perseverance, while the second theme signifies hope and faith. The music tosses and turns as the theme is passed to each section and continues to press on to a triumphant landing!
