Choral Music (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Haan, Jacob

Jacob de Haan was commissioned to write Choral Music a concert band from Dinxperlo (Netherlands). This band gave the work its premiere in 1997 during the World Music Contest in Kerkrade. Choral Music is based on the chorale Sollt ich meinem Gott nicht singen by the seventeenth century German composer Johann Schop. Contrary to the title, Choral Music has nothing in common with a traditional choral arrangement. This contrasting work has a flashing beginning and only much later following on several thematic changes does Jacob de Haan allow the chorale melody to develop into its original form. Following this episode the chorale becomes a toccata developing into a whirlwind finish.Duration: 5:45

The Galloping Major (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Bastow, George - Jacob, Gordon

During the 1940's, BBC radio listeners enjoyed a weekly comedy programme, which starred the comedian Tommy Handley, called It's That Man Again (ITMA). A feature of each programme was a witty arrangement for orchestra of a popular or Music Hall song. These were always made specially for the programme, many were by Jacob, Gordon. The Galloping Major was an ITMA arrangement. A popular Music Hall tune from the Victorian era, in Jacob, Gordon's hands, becomes a musical gem. This new version for Concert Band, transcribed by Steadman-Allen, Ray, retains all the fun of the original.

When you have been playing in a band for a long time, you will know that music belongs to the most beautiful moments in life, but also to the roughest times. Making music together can give you strength when things are difficult. To a Friend is a wonderfully comforting work for anyone going through a dark time. Jacob de Haan composed the work for his father in law, Gerard Bosch, a musician to the core. The piece received its first performance just weeks before his passing. On a sun-kissed evening, his friends, the musicians of his two music societies - Oefening Baart Kunst (Practice Makes Perfect) Otterlo, and the Renie Orkest Artillerie Trompetterkorps (Reunion Band Artillery Trumpet Corps) - played the work for Gerard - an unknowing yet beautiful goodbye.

La Antigua - Jacob de Haan

With this work, composer Jacob de Haan depicts a procession of the inhabitants of the Basque town Zumarraga to the hermitage of Santa Mara La Antigua in the mountains nearby. The music, that has carefully been built around the repeated rhythm of the town's name, varies from meditative and hymn-like to emotional and powerful. Thus, it is a atmospheric piece with plenty of musical appeal.
