    Hobo Train - John O'Reilly

"Hobo Train" reflects on the history of the Original Hobo Band of Pitman, New Jersey with an interesting mix of original material and several railroad songs associated with hobos. Opening with a fanfare based upon "I've Been Working on the Railroad" a simulated train whistle leads into "The Wabash Cannonball" and "Get on Board." The flute section is featured in a lyrical setting of "This Train Is Bound for Glory" and the composition ends with a rousing march style arrangement of "I've Been Working on the Railroad." (3:40)

    Chino Hills - John O'Reilly

Syncopated brass and driving percussion open this sparkling concert selection. The rhythmic woodwind melody that enters after the brief introduction is set in the Dorian mode, a tonality that dominates the remainder of the piece. The very prominent percussion section gives way to a more delicate woodblock, triangle and tambourine ostinato that accompanies the light hearted second theme. Trumpets now take over the melody and the style hints at the early Hispanic roots of Chico Hills. A lyrical theme in the original Dorian mode highlights the slower middle section that builds to a dramatic climax before returning to the opening Allegro and a short exciting conclusion.

    Maritime March - John O'Reilly

"Maritime March" is a "jaunty" British-style march opening up in the key of C natural minor (Aeolian mode). Sixteenth notes combined with simple syncopations highlight the second strain in a question-and-answer section that pits the woodwinds against the brass. The traditional trio moves to the key of E-flat and features the low clarinets in unison with the French horns. This is a very appealing march that will be easy to put together and really make your young band shine. This piece correlates to Book 2, Page 15.
