Pet Of The Petticoats - John Philip Sousa

When Sousa became the fourteenth leader of the United States Marine Band he immediately began to add his own works to the bands repertoire, including Pet of the Petticoats March. This delightful and interesting march is in a different form than that of Sousas later marches, having no introduction, as it begins right with the first strain. Originally written for a stage play of the same name, Pet of the Petticoats March provides a musical window into another era in a simpler, less complex America.

Wolverine March - John Philip Sousa

In 1881, after being named conductor of the United States Marine Band, Sousa composed six new marches to add to the bands repertoire. One of them, Wolverine March, was "respectfully dedicated to His Excellency Hon. David H. Jerome, Governor of Michigan, and Staff." Lively, bright, and stylish, its tuneful quality makes it a natural march addition to concert band programs. As an additional note, Sousa wrote another march in 1926 which he called The Pride of the Wolverines; and while the titles are similar, they are distinctly separate marches and should not be confused with each other.

National Emblem March - E.E. Bagley

This classic march was written on a train in 1902 and has been an extremely popular concert favorite ever since. John Philip Sousa once referred to it as one of the three most effective street marches ever written, and Frederick Fennell called the piece "as perfect as a march can be." It still remains one of the best-known marches today, and this exceptional setting for young bands will allow developing groups to perform it effectively with great success.

Bonnie Annie Laurie March - John Philip Sousa

According to Sousa scholar Paul Bierley, Sousa often remarked that the old Scottish ballad Annie Laurie was the most beautiful of all folk songs. In 1883 he wrote the march Bonnie Annie Laurie based on this favorite folk song. In 1880 Sousa became the fourteenth leader of the United States Marine Band, and this was undoubtedly one of the marches that he composed during this period. Highlighted and enhanced in this march-style setting, this wonderful melody never sounded better.
