    Starlight - David Gorham

Commissioned by the Starlight Band of Tulsa, Oklahoma, here is a piece that brings a broad palette of sonic colors to the concert hall. The light and spritely opening evokes images of darkening night skies as one by one the stars appear. Soon, as with the ever-growing number of stars, the instrumentation grows into an expansive mural, filling the halls with sounds as colorful and full as a clear starry night. Then, just as it started, the sounds begin to fall off and disappear, gradually fading out just as the stars before the approaching light of day.

Arctic Funk Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

Arctic Funk might just as well have been a flashing sequel to a scene from Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story. Popular music but with a difference, as indicated by the title. The work's quiet section temporarily soothes down the heated passion of its two corner movements, but everywhere else action is required throughout. The work was commissioned in 1991 by Troms? Brass. Situated just above the Polar Circle, Troms? is one of Norway's northernmost towns. Topographically, the town probably comes across as freezing cold, but Troms? is famous for its 'warm' night-life. The Composer: In Arctic Funk you might get a feeling of a party that takes place between ice-rocks and snow-capped mountains. 04:45

    A Scottish Sunrise - Travis J. Weller

The Celtic hymn Morning Has Broken is used as thematic material for this vivid depiction of sunrise on the Scottish landscape. A lush and serene opening with optional flute solo depicts the quiet calm just moments before dawn. A building fanfare ushers in the rising sun, reaching its peak just as the sun breaks through in full glory. The opening strains of the hymn are stated by various sections as a lilting original jig adds to the festive atmosphere, bursting forth together for a rollicking conclusion.

Where Eagles Sing - Paul Lovatt-Cooper

The inspiration for this piece came when the composer visited Florida and the Bird Sanctuary in Walt Disney World's Animal Kingdom. He was in the audience to see the rare bird's show where he witnessed some fabulous looking and endangered birds that were trained to perform different tricks that wowed the audience. The highlight for him was the conclusion of the show where the most awesome sight greeted us as an American Bald Eagle soared over the audience. That particular breed of Eagle has been a very rare bird of late. With so few in numbers, it nearly became a member of the sad group of animals that are extinct. The host of the show took great delight in informing the audience that the fantastic creature is now officially safe and no longer classed as endangered. This made a great impact on the composer as the Eagle is an amazing bird, huge in size and power and yet so graceful in flight. This piece is everything associated with the Eagle; bold, powerful and graceful and now free to soar and sing in the American homelands.Where Eagles Sing has been hugely successful as a curtain-raiser (or finale) with brass bands around the world and it is hoped that this version for wind band will be just as popular.

How Far is it to Bethlehem? (Concert Band with Optional Choir - Score and Parts) - Noble & Willcocks

Written by Frances Alice Chesterton, wife of G. K. Chesterton, How far is it to Bethlehem? this carol expresses the profound longing we feel to experience firsthand the miracle of the Christmas story, not just as thinking adults, but with the wonder of children. The childlike question How far is it to Bethlehem? and the simple response Not very far begin this gentle carol. The lyrics go on to reveal the little smiles and tears that children bring as their gifts, as well as their inherent trust, as they fall asleep. This arrangement by David Willcocks is for SSA, and the instrumental accompaniment is the same voicing in groups of woodwinds and trumpets. This arrangement represents one in the Series of Band Arrangements compatible with David Willcocks' Carols for Choirs.
