Tygh Ridge March - Steve Hodges
This spirited march would be a perfect choice for a concert opener. Written well within the ranges of first year band students, each section has the opportunity to play the melody or the interesting harmonies. A solid foundation by the percussion section allows the piece to move at a brisk march tempo. With effective dynamic contrasts and articulation patterns, is a great educational tool for the developing musician as well as a piece that is just fun to play!

Atlas - William Palange
In July, 2013, the wreckage of a commercial schooner named Atlas was discovered in Lake Ontario in nearly 300 feet of water just outside the Port of Oswego, NY. The Atlas was carrying a load of limestone meant for the U.S. government harbor in Oswego on the day of its fateful journey in May, 1839. Only two miles from port, a gale-force wind rocked the ship and its heavy load shifted, causing the vessel to sink and all of its crew members to perish. This piece was written to portray the majesty of Lake Ontario as well as the brave sailors, young and old, who navigated her volatile waters. (4:50) This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

Paths of Glory - Carl Strommen
With just a bit of a different bend, composer Carl Strommen presents us with a concert march that escapes the ordinary and the expected, moving us through this work with a flow that fascinates. Style concepts are an important teaching tool within its measures, presenting a flowing lyrical line as well as contrasting pulsating thrusts. This is a perfect work with which to open your concert or change the pace after the performance of a major work or arrangement. Highly recommended!

Night - Craig Andrew Fitzpatrick
"Night" is the result of a collaborative project between the composer and the 6th grade beginning band directed by his wife in Morton, Illinois. The students in her band class each write an eight-measure melody as a composition project which is part of the beginning band curriculum. These melodies each start and end on concert B-flat and use only the notes the students have learned on their instruments. The class voted on the best melody, and the winner was "Majestic Night, Oh Winter Night" by Sarah Gunter. The students then observed how this melody was developed by the composer into a concert band piece that they would perform later that year. Compositional terms such as repetition, fragmentation, and augmentation could then be taught to the 6th graders in a new piece for young band that was written just for them. This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

Liturgical Music for Band, Opus 33 - Martin Mailman
, was completed in 1963. Since then, the piece has become a landmark work in the band repertoire with countless performances by several generations of students. The piece is based on four movements selected from the Mass "Proper" and "Ordinary." The band plays in a chime-like style to announce the opening movement, "Introit." The second movement has the same three sections as the "Kyrie" from the Mass (). The theme of the third movement is the same rhythm as the word "Gloria," and the style is jubilant, just like the Mass text ("Glory to God in the highest . . . "). The fourth movement, "Alleluia," features an energetic fugue and an exciting climax.

The Mountain Troll - Kevin Kaisershot
This creature is not very coordinated as is evident in the "troll dance" sequence which begins in the middle of this fun piece. Imagine the hilarity that must ensue as the troll attempts to keep time in the dance having no sense of rhythm whatsoever. We've all seen (or know of) people just like this! Fun to play and listen to. (3:40)

The Grand Tetons
The Teton Range is part of the Rocky Mountain chain just east of the Idaho border and south of Yellowstone National Park. The name of this majestic range has its roots in the Shoshone "teewinet," meaning "many pinnacles." The opening measures of The Grand Tetons should be played broadly and majestically. Mixed-meters and a swing-like feeling are introduced later on, followed by more strident material leading to a recapitulation of the opening theme as the piece draws to a close.

Samba Time!
Samba Time delivers something wonderful for the youngest of students. Composer James Meredith has found a way to use very limited technical demands to teach the style of a Samba. If students are engaged as beginners and enjoy what they do, they will be inspired to continue on their instruments. This piece will do just that and will be fun for them and their parents at their very first concert

Crunchy Granola Suite - Neil Diamond
Neil Diamond wrote his Crunchy Granola Suite when he moved to Los Angeles in the 1970s and got to know macrobiotic granola as part of a health-conscious lifestyle. The lyrics of this cheerful song even suggest that eating granola might just be more wholesome than a visit to a psychologist... The song became even better known when the renowned Percy Faith Orchestra turned it into an instrumental version. It was the tune of a number of radio shows, and for good reason. The catchy music is recognizable: an earworm that keeps playing through your mind - in a good way. Highly recommended for your next concert!
