Christus Factus Est (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Bruckner, Anton - Doss, Thomas

Thomas Doss orchestrated this inspiring and very playable transcription of Christus factus est (WAB 11), the motet written by Bruckner in 1884, for wind orchestra. After Messe fr den Grundonnerstag from 1844 and a motet for eight-voice mixed choir, three trombones and string instruments ad libitum from 1873, this was Bruckner's third setting of the Latin gradual (Gregorian chant) of the same name. Wagner's influence can be clearly heard.Duration: 5.15

Symphonic Variations on In Dulci Jubilo (Flexible Ensemble - Score and Parts) - Smith, Claude T. - Earp, Joseph Benjamin

Symphonic Variations on In Dulci Jubilo promotes joy and celebration. In Dulci Jubilo is Latin for in sweet rejoicing. The lovely choral beginning features the familiar carol Good Christian Men, Rejoice, and forms the groundwork for this unique setting of this timeless traditional Christmas carol. This flexible arrangement allows ensembles to perform the work with as few as thirteen musicians providing accessibility and flexibility for numerous instrumentation needs, while still allowing a full ensemble sound.*The posted recording is based on the full band scoring but aligns with the suggested preferences for either woodwinds/strings or brass suggested in the score.

Stjernen og Rosa (The Star and a Rose) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Hannevik, John Philip

The Star and a Rose is a big-scale Christmas piece for band, featuring four seasonal chorales. The first is a Gregorian-like chant Hodie Christus natus est.In this section of the piece, a soloist can be placed away from the band, maybe on a gallery. The soloist can be a tenor instrument, maybe trombone, or you can feature a vocal soloist. After this, the music leads us on to the old German Christmas chorale Lo, how a rose e'er blooming. This song is given a fairly rhythmical treatment, but make sure that the melody is presented in a cantabile style. An interlude follows, before the piece presents one of the most used and loved Scandinavian Christmas chorales, Mitt hjerte alltid vanker (My Heart will always wander), composed by the Danish bishop Hans Adolph Brorson around 1732. This song is building towards a climax, before the solo horn brings it all down to the Stable view described in the lyrics. Then comes a transition that brings us in to the final section of the piece, which presents the international Christmas Carol Adeste Fideles. As many will notice, I have borrowed a section from David Wilcocks majestic harmonization towards the end.The title of the piece has its background form the lyrics in My heart will always wander, where the text speaks about the stars in the sky. But also in the Latin text for Adeste Fideles: Stella duce, Magi, Christum adorantes. The Rose is of course from the lyrics in the chorale Lo, how a Rose.Duration: 10.30

Operation Invictus (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Webb, Amy

Operation Invictus is a rising band work that checks all the boxes: exciting parts for all players, commanding rhythms, and challenging, yet surmountable melodies that will leave your band feeling great about themselves and their performance. Each instrument gets to play snappy little licks that are so engaging they'll want to practice. Even the low brass gets some fanfare-like material that will sound powerful. The very word invictus is Latin for "undefeated." A tremendous piece at the easy level that can be played either at the beginning or end of your next concert or festival. Duration: 3.00

Lux Aeterna (Flexible Ensemble - Score and Parts) - Schwarz, Otto M.

Otto M. Schwarz was asked by a friend to compose a chorale for the funeral of his child. Lux Aeterna (The Eternal Light) is actually part of the requiem mass, but in this composition, there is no reference to the original Latin text. People who recount near-death experiences often report a bright light. The music moves back and forth between passages that are sad, optimistic, and imploring in nature, posing questions that cannot be answered. The end of the piece comes, however, with a conciliatory major chord that reflects the calm and warmth of this light that promises redemption.Duration: 3.45

Please Don't Go (Concert Band - Score only) - Wiffin, Rob

There could easily be a backstory for this piece. It is ostensibly a Latin dance at samba tempo but it is slightly tinged with a sense of wistfulness and heartache and it is easy to work out where the imploring words of the title Please don't go fit into the melody. It is not technically difficult to play although it needs an appropriate sense of style and rhythm. Parts are comprehensively cued and the piece works without a bass guitar although it is desirable if possible. Similarly, not all the percussion instruments are vital although they add considerably to the feel of the music if you have them.
