The Sound and the Fury - Robert W. Smith
was inspired by the literary work of the same name by William Faulkner, known for his epic portrayal of the conflicts between the old and new South. Opening with a vibrant drama of punctuating thrusts in strings, winds, and percussion, the mood only shifts when we move to a lyrical and ambient section of contrasting sounds. Powerful strokes return, moving to a dramatic conclusion. A superior choice for concert or contest with guaranteed stunning audience appeal. (1:58)

Journey's End - Steve Hodges
Upon completion of an activity, an event, or other meaningful experiences, there is a time for reflection for what has been accomplished and what is to follow. The final presentation of the melody indicates a positive feeling of accomplishment and features a moving countermelody by the woodwinds leading to a quiet, contemplative ending. Cloud Gate - Timothy Loest
Inspired by an enormous, mirror-like elliptical sculpture by British artist Anish Kapoor, this festival work reflects the spirit of Chicago's busy streets, vibrant people, and magnificent architecture. A bold opening moves into an invigorating theme that occurs under a moving woodwind ostinato figure. A festive mixed-meter section continues to drive the work forward before a seamless transition into a slower bluesy section reminiscent of George Gershwin. Students experience urban energy once more as the final thematic statement leads to a dynamic close!

For Those Who Have Served - David Marlatt
provides ultimate flexibility for ensembles with incomplete instrumentation or odd combinations. These pieces are playable by as few as 5 woodwind, brass, or string players with or without percussion. This creates the opportunity for a mixed quintet to perform these titles but also allows for performance for 10-15 players up to full a band/orchestra with parts doubling. Great for music camps, contest use or any band room that has non-standard instrumentation. Sounding very patriotic in nature would make an ideal selection to be performed at a reflective event or simply to pay homage to the thousands of men and women who have served in the military or front line workers during times of crisis. The noble theme is first heard in a solo voice before moving to a more full sonority. A second theme with a very different feel is performed before the original soloist's sound brings this lyrical piece to peaceful conclusion. (2:45)
