When the publisher asked me to make an arrangement of an ABBA tune, S.O.S. was the first song I thought of. Its introduction and melody are well suited to play for Wind Band. Admittedly, the key had to be shifted to make it sound good for this instrumentation. To me, this is nostalgia, while for others, the Mamma Mia movie/show will be what they associate with this wonderful song. Apart from a few medleys, few of ABBA's songs are available to Wind Band. So, it was very fun to work on this classic.The arrangement is made quite simply to fit many sizes of bands. Technically, it is also relatively simple both in range and rhythm. As you can see, there are many ways to adjust this arrangement to your own ensemble. Bring out melody lines and the bassline, and a lot is done. Mercury Rising was commissioned by sinfonisches blasorchester wehdel and its conductor Thomas Ratzek, to celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2018. They premiered this piece in their half-century concert on 2nd November 2018 in the Bremerhaven Stadttheater in Germany. Designed as a virtuosic and lively opener, Mercury Rising opens with nervous energy and driving, syncopated rhythms in a blaze of colour. The horns and saxophones then introduce a broad melody, which the trumpets subsequently take up after a change of tonality. A quieter moment introduces a distant fanfare on muted horns over bubbling semiquavers in the low clarinets. This is interrupted by a passionate tenor melody but soon returns on the full brass section, accompanied by echoes of the opening woodwind figuration, and is extended to bring the piece to a triumphant close. An addition to the composer's series of folk music inspired pieces, has the slightly condescending title "Dead End". The piece is a funeral march and so also written for an occasion, where this style of music was a natural inspiration. It is built on a drum ostinato, which is followed by a melody in Norwegian folk music style. The repetitions in the melody line and rhythm, create a hypnotic effect, leaving us in a special state of mind, alternating between deep sorrow, bottomless despair and grateful gratitude. The piece has proven to be effective, both as a concert opener and as the last piece in a concert. Duration: 6.10

Watermelon Sugar was the summer hit of the year 2020. It is a song by the British singer-songwriter Harry Styles, who felt inspired by the title of the American novel In Watermelon Sugar (1968) by Richard Brautigan. The melody of the chorus had already taken form during 'Live on Tour', the debut tour that Styles embarked on in September 2017, finishing in July the following year. On a free day, Harry and his band went to The Cave Studio in Nashville, where they created the chorus melody. It is said that the song is about Styles' ex-girlfriend Camille Rowe. Mike Sheppard arranged this catchy tune for a flexible (six-part) ensemble as a lasting memory of the extraordinary year 2020. Duration: 3.00

The title of this work is based on the name of the commissioning band: Music Society Asaf (Dutch for Asaph). In the Hebrew Bible, the poet, singer and seer Asaph is in charge of the choir in the house of King David. Various psalms, including Psalm 81, which is used in this work, are attributed to him. The melody of this psalm is flanked by a march-like initial part, and the traditional klezmer melody Uri Tzion features as a spectacular finale.Duration: 7.00

The crossing of a mountain pass is called traversada in Romansh. Such a crossing bears uncertainties and dangers, but also hope and new opportunities. Whoever sets out for a traversada is leaving behind what's familiar in the quest for new places and people. The piece Traversada, based on a Romansh song about farewell and uncertain reunion, musically depics such a journey. At the offset, off-stage soloists introduce fragments of the melody after which a dramatic narrative unfolds. An intense musical shift leads to a calm section, featuring the original melody in pulsating, muted sound colours. Towards the end, the whole structure is gradually rebuilt and leads to an exuberant ending, where the vibrant melodic motifs reemerge. Duration: 12.00
