Out Of The Shadows - Michael Sweeney
Commissioned for the Wisconsin Lutheran High School's centennial year, this expansive work incorporates the Welsh folk song The Ash Grove in a lush and varied treatment. The main melody, played first by horns and baritone, returns near the end in a glorious, fully orchestrated chorale. In between is a beautiful secondary theme played by oboe and flute soloists followed by a dramatic fugal section. A musically rewarding and effective piece. (6:00)

Nearly 400 years ago (in 1609) Henry Hudson and his ship, the Half Moon, explored the majestic river that was later to bear his name. Half Moon on the Hudson pays tribute to this area of New York and the spirit of exploration and adventure. A regal fanfare announces the beginning of the work, followed by an energetic and rhythmic section that features various sections of the band answering one another. An emotional and chorale-like middle section provides a calmer mood along with lush harmonizations. Suite from Mass - Leonard Bernstein
Bernstein's Mass was a monumental 90-minute work written for the opening of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. in 1971. In this suite commissioned by the Canadian Brass and the Eastman Wind Ensemble, arranger Michael Sweeney focuses on a select number of movements, often using the brass quintet to represent the vocal lines found in the original. The striking and beautiful work includes Alleluia, Sanctus, the well-known A Simple Song, Agnus Dei, Offertory and Almighty Father. Although scored for brass quintet and wind ensemble, ample cues are provided to allow this to be performed by a wind ensemble or symphonic band alone. Dur: c.14:00 (Grade 5)
