In spite of displaying remarkable musical gifts Chabrier (1841-1894) was sent by his father to study law and in due course, having taken a law degree, went to work in his native French Ministry of the Interior, stay there for eighteen years. During the whole of this time he was developing his real interests in music and painting, including composing operettas and music for the piano. Following a holiday in Spain in 1883, Chabrier wrote a rhapsody for orchestra based on Spanish tunes he had heard. This became Espana; it achieved immediate acclaim and is still his most performed work. Joyeuse Marche (originally called Marche Francaise) was written in 1888. It exudes Chabrier's rhythmical exuberance, spontaneity and wit, bringing pleasure and joy to performers and listeners alike. Truly a march which lives up to its title.

Brand, Michael's piece imagines a misty dawn as the sun rises over the shaped stones, followed by a robed ceremony, a sacrifice and finally a dance.

The work has a military feel in the opening fanfare, but settles down to an angular melody with frequent changes in time signature. The middle section should be played expressively and maintain a good flow. The speed of the Allegro is most likely to be determined by the agility of the trombone section in the unison running quavers. There is the possibility of adding extra drummers near the end - a drum corps was used behind the Band in the first performance making a stunning effect.

Cast in three short movements the work endeavours to recreate the pioneering spirit of the journey across America (the then 'New World') as this vast continent was opened up and its wonders exposed. The three dance episodes that make up the suite are symbolic in an analogous sense to this 'reaching' principle: the first - Earth Dance - is a vigorous overture, pushing out the frontiers; the interlude - Moon Dance - contemplates the huge distances to be crossed and Sun Dance represents the realisation of the American dream, rhythmic and full of energy. This work was originally written for flute, oboe (or two violins) and String Orchestra in 1923. This arrangement was premiered by the Stockholm Symphonic Winds in September 1993, conducted by the arranger. The style of A Fugal Concerto is very much neo-classical - all the rage at the time, although whether Holst had heard Stravinsky's examples is not known. In so far as the work is fugal, the adjective applies more to the texture than the form, although the second movement is canonic. The contrapuntal texture is not straightforward as phrases are displaced across barlines and cross rhythms are a feature. Nothing is allowed to settle until the folk tune is introduced toward the end. Yet, within this musical web, fascinating patterns and cross references reveal themselves.

Blaydon, near Newcastle upon Tyne in the north-east of England, was for many years the scene of holiday races and the basis for a good time enjoyed by all! Many of those going to the races called into the inns for refreshment as they made their happy way, singing their songs, including the famous Blaydon Races. Brand, Michaels arrangement is somewhat tongue-in-cheek as it begins with the accompaniment and leaves audiences guessing the whereabouts of the tune. The triangle part is a feature throughout, and many provide some scope for amusement during performance.

£11.95Rondo Grottesco (Tuba Solo) (Concert Band - Score Only) - Bourgeois, Derek
When Bourgeois, Derek was a schoolboy he played tuba, and as a budding composer he decided he needed a grand vehicle to display his mastery of the instrument. He therefore set out to write a work and completed the opening tune. At that time, however he did not have the expertise to develop the material and after the tune the concerto came to an abrupt end. Many years later the composer was invited to write a piece for tuba and concert band and Rondo Grottesco is the result - the schoolboy composers original tune developed not into a grand concerto but a fine miniature.
