Cockaigne Overture (In London Town) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Elgar, Edward - Noble, Paul

Cockaigne Overture was composed when Edward Elgar received a commission from the Royal Philharmonic Society, and he reported that the new piece was "cheerful and Londony, 'stout and steaky'...honest, healthy, humorous and strong, but not vulgar." The first performance was in the Queen's Hall, London, on 20 June 1901, conducted by the composer. He dedicated the work to his "many friends, the members of British orchestras." The music was an immediate success and became one of Elgar's most popular works. In its 15 minutes or so, the overture gives a lively and colourful musical portrait of Edwardian London. 'Cockaigne' was a term used by moralists at that time as a metaphor for gluttony and drunkenness, while Britain adopted the name humorously for London, and from it we get the Cockney. Cockaigne or Cockayne /ka' kein/, the word origin tracing back to the 13th century, is a land of plenty in medieval myth, an imaginary place of extreme luxury and ease where physical comforts and pleasures are always immediately at hand and where the harshness of medieval peasant life does not exist. The work presents various aspects of turn-of-the-century London and Londoners. It begins with a quiet but bustling theme which leads into an unbroken sequence of snapshots: the cockneys, the church bells, the romantic couples, a slightly ragged brass band (perhaps the Salvation Army) and a contrastingly grand and imperious military band. The broad theme representing Londoners has been stated as the first occurrence of Elgar's trademark direction, 'nobilmente.' The work ends in a characteristically Elgarian blaze of sound, including an optional full organ.

A Bluegrass Overture (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

A Bluegrass Overture was commissioned by Gabriel Wooley and funded by a grant from Leslie and Cathy Anderson for the Central Kentucky Concert Band to celebrate their 40th anniversary in 2016. This energetic overture opens with an introduction loosely based on bluegrass chords before a slower, legato chorale appears in the clarinets and flutes. This is short-lived and soon a new mood is introduced, based on a repeated-note accompaniment. This leads to the main theme, heavily syncopated with bluesy inflections. A central section features a cantabile melody, which changes key frequently, before the main theme reappears, leading to a triumphal presentation of the earlier chorale melody.Duration: 6.30

Shorewood Overture (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sweeney, Michael

Combining an extravaganza for players of all levels creates an exciting spectacle for parents, while providing much needed incentives for the younger players. Shorewood Overture is specifically designed to be performed by multi-level bands and, rather than the typical massed band number where everyone plays at once, this ingenious overture allows each level to be featured briefly by itself, along with sections where everyone plays together. In addition, the Level 3 parts include cues that allow the piece to be performed by a single ensemble.Duration: 4:20Note: Level 2/Level 1 versions are not playable separately

A Fugal Overture (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Holst, Gustav - Noble, Paul

Gustav Holst began composition of A Fugal Overture in 1922, completing the full score in January 1923. Despite its name, the overture is not strictly fugal. It belongs to the era of neo-classicism, but apparently by coincidence, for Holst had not yet heard some of the Stravinsky and Hindemith works which set this fashion. The fugal subject is full of spiky crossrhythms - Holst grouped the eighth notes (quavers) of his 4/4 into a pattern of 3 + 3 + 2, thus giving a bar of three unequal beats. The piece is intense and exciting, and should make an important addition to the repertoire of the Concert Band.

Overture on French Carols (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Lane, Philip - Noble, Paul

The idea for this work sprang from a visit to Bayeux in the weeks before Christmas in 2001 when carols were being played through loudspeakers in the streets to accompany seasonal shoppers. The overture was premiered by the BBC Concert Orchestra in 2003 and subsequently broadcast on BBC Radio 3. The work has been commercially recorded by the Royal Ballet Sinfonia conducted by Gavin Sutherland. The carols employed in this overture are: Il est n, le divin enfant, Patapan, Nol nouvelet, Quelle est cette odeur agreeable, and Masters in this hall. Some are brought together in the final section with Quittez, pasteurs as additional counterpoint in the horns. This piece will be an important addition to seasonal repertoire, and certainly in a setting that will be fresh and inspiring for audiences.
