This short but solemn overture was written on the occasion of the 110th jubilee of Harmonie Hautcharage, Luxembourg. It is an homage to Jean-Paul Frisch and his son Grard (the present conductor), who each have been conducting the ensemble for many years. Under their leadership, the band has developed and improved remarkably. The very first musical theme, presented during the introduction of this little overture, is based on the letters hidden in the names Jean-Paul and Grard Frisch (in which h is considered b - as it is in German), thus aiming the spotlight on both key figures in the history of Harmonie Hautcharage. After the rather stately intro, the allegro is more joyful and lighthearted, thus depicting the optimism of the many young players of the band. The end is exciting and energetic: it radiates positivity and belief in the future.

The overture to Giuseppe Verdi's 1862 opera La Forza del Destino (The Power of Fate) has remained standard repertoire for orchestras around the world. Festouverture [1902] - Armas Järnefelt
The strong voice of Finnish national romanticism Armas Jrnefelt (1869-1958) composed his jubilant Festouverture (Festive Overture) for the official opening of the Finnish National Theatre on 9 April 1902 Robert J. On August 14th 2020, the composer Noah Wada saw the Perseids meteor shower from a hill. He could clearly see many bright stars streaming across the sky, as if they were falling down on the earth. The dazzling sight was enough to inspire him to compose this overture."Starlit Landscape" was commissioned by the Kawagoe High School Band, Kawagoe City, Saitama, Japan and premiered on March 20th, 2023 by the band and Mr. Hiroki Mori, director."Starlit Landscape" is a sparkling overture from the Japanese composer Naoya Wada. It begins with a bold brass fanfare over a bright woodwind passage.

The plot of this overture takes place in the year 3000 A.D. At that time traffic between the earth and the planets relies exclusively on space flights. War as a last resort to "settle" arguments between people on earth no longer exists. There is only one gigantic spacecraft which is able to navigate both above and beneath the surface that supervises the oceans. This vessel, the "Lord of Seven Seas", is a hundred times larger than the "Nautilus" or the "Titanic" and must not be compared to any ship of our times. In the introduction of the overture, the gigantic vessel is presented by employing a musical style which is commonly associated with space flights. The introduction isfollowed by a fragment, which evokes the wild fury of rain and storm, and therefore reminds us of the story of the "Flying Dutchman". The middle section is written as a barcarole. The vessel investigates the local fauna in the depths of the Arctic Ocean. People on board enjoy the calmness as well as the variety and beauty of the animals. In the final part, the gigantic vessel emerges from below the surface and climbs to high altitudes flying from one ocean to the other. The magnificent finale portrays once again the incomparable sight which is offered by the impressive "Lord of Seven Seas".

This piece was composed in 1937 in the composer's later part of life. Here, Widqvist shows his broad competence as a composer by using both classic marching and late-romantic thematic elements with exciting harmonic twists. In addition, you can find a perfect fugue where the composer shows that he masters this advanced composition technique. One can imagine that Widqvist wanted to show off his entire repertoire of knowledge to take the lead in the unspoken competition with colleague and friend Sam Rydberg. Rydberg had several years earlier composed a concert overture with a similar form. However, this piece is simpler in its design and lacks the technical brilliance that Widqvist shows in his contrapuntal treatment and harmonious diversity.The concert overture was re-orchestrated in 1939 by the composer for symphony orchestra, and it is this version and the original score for a large military orchestra that form the basis for this edition. My aim has been to keep all of Widqvist's original intentions, but still make use of all the possibilities of the modern symphonic wind orchestra. The composer's own arrangements for symphony orchestra have been of great help in this work.- Niclas Blixt -
