Pavane Pour Une Infante Defunte (Pavanne for a Dead Princess) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Ravel, Maurice - Brubaker, Jerry
Maurice Ravel was only 24 when his piano solo Pavane Pour une Infante Defunte, which translated means Pavane for a dead princess, became the rage of the drawing rooms and salons of Paris in 1899, but the work already held the unmistakable stamp of his style. Ravel orchestrated the work in 1910. Jerry Brubaker presents this lovely work in a Concert band setting with all of the lush melodies and harmonies of the original work but with simplified ranges and a comfortable key. A marvellous choice for a truly beautiful piece of impressionistic literature!Duration: 4.30

Orpheus in the Underworld (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Offenbach, Jacques - Van der Beek, Wil
Jacques Offenbach was born in 1819 in Cologne, Germany, but as a child he moved to Paris where he received a thorough musical education. In his operetta Orpheus in the Underworld, Offenbach parodies the famous Greek legend of Orpheus and Euridice. Indirectly, however, he criticises the complacency of many of his contemporaries. The overture was not written entirely by Offenbach, Carl Binder added various pieces to it for a Viennese production of this operetta in 1860 and since then, these pieces have remained part of the composition. This appealing transcription includes the famous Can Can which is sure to get your audience high kicking in the aisles!Duration: 9:15

The Best of Charles Aznavour (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Kernen, Roland
Charles Aznavour, the son of Armenian immigrants, was born in 1924, in Paris. He finally launched his singing career in France with great effort; despite his lack of star looks and less than remarkable voice. However, he had two things going for him: powerful on-stage charisma and great willpower. It took him about twenty years to reach the top but when he did, his determination certainly paid off. He became a star singer/songwriter in France and his chansons were embraced throughout the rest of the world as well. The typical French atmosphere that pervades his music can be clearly experienced in this medley for concert band.

Preludio All' Atto II (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Verdi, Giuseppe - Cesarini, Franco
For the first draft of the libretto of Un ballo in maschera (1859), Giuseppe Verdi drew his inspiration from the grand-opra Gustave III by Auber, an opera performed for the first time in Paris in 1833 that depicted the assassination of the King of Sweden. However, censorship, first in Naples and then in Rome, intervened and imposed heavy modifications. Perhaps because it was too demanding, Verdi showed no intransigence with the requests coming from Naples and refused to alter the libretto. On the other hand, he yielded to the requests of the Roman authorities and agreed to change the site of the action and the identity of the protagonists. Consequently, the scene moved from Stockholm to Boston and King Gustav became the Count of Warwick, Governor of Massachusetts. The prelude to the second act is very short and introduces the scene at the place where the scaffold stands. In only a few measures, Verdi skilfully succeeds in condensing the interior restlessness of the protagonists, alongside a prayer of hope.Duration: 2:15

I Vespri Siciliani (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Verdi, Giuseppe - Cesarini, Franco
In 1854, Verdi was in Paris to compose I vespri siciliani (1855), a commission from the Theatre of the Opera. The composer soon became intolerant to the requests of the French "Grand Opra" as he considered them too restrictive and cunning. "I'll be very happy when I have finished I vespri siciliani. An opera at the Opra is as tiring as killing a bull. Five hours of music?... Hauf!" Verdi declared. Following the first performance, the French composer Hector Berlioz wrote in the "Journal des Dbats" an article that read "We have to admit that in I vespri siciliani, the penetrating intensity of the melodic expression, the sumptuous variety of the instrumentation, the fullness, the poetical sonority of the whole, the warm vivacity that shines everywhere and the passionate strength, although slow in disclosing (a characteristic feature of Verdi's talent), give the entire work a mark of greatness, a sort of majestic sovereignty more underlined than in Verdi's previous theatre productions."Duration: 8:30

Trois Rag - Caprices (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Milhaud, Darius - De Meij, Johan
The French composer Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) was a member of the Groupe des Six. This group of six composers gathering Honegger, Poulence, Auric, Durey, Tailleferre and Milhaud, imitated Erik Satie by revolting against the deeply rooted traditional conventions of that time. They reacted against impressionism (Debussy) and romanticism (Wagner, Mahler) and felt very strongly about the music of Satie and Stravinsky. Milhaud's most popular work is undoubtedly the ballet La Creation du Monde, one of the most striking examples of jazz influences in classical music. The premiere at the Theatre des Champs Elysees in October 1923 caused a real scandal with the Paris public. The Trois Rag-Caprices for piano were composed one year earlier, in the summer of 1922, and could be considered as a kind of preliminary sketch for La Creation du Monde. There are indeed clear similarities between both compositions as to the rhythmical and harmonic aspects. The Trois Rag-Caprices were orchestrated for symphony orchestra by Milhaud himself some time later. The same happened to Saudades do Brasil (1920), a piano composition punctuated with Latin-American influences, which was written after his stay in Rio de Janeiro (1917-18) exactly as his ballet Le Boeuf sur le Toit. Johan de Meij's orchestration of Trois Rag-Caprices for symphonic band is a most welcome addition next to the original band works of Milhaud, such as Suite Francaise (1945) and West Point Suite (1951).Duration: 8.00
