Chorale and Mystic Chant - Timothy Loest
A beautiful hymn with rich harmonies and suspensions opens this fine work for beginning bands. As the lyrical melody reaches a final cadence, the piece then moves into a bombastic chant with a wealth of percussion. The theme is presented in different textures and students will explore the basic components of a fugue in an easy setting. Listeners and performers alike will be excited by the rhythmic drive of the percussion. In addition, consider using the opening as a daily chorale to work on intonation with your ensemble.

On This Day Earth Shall Ring
The 14th-century carol, "Personent hodie," is both mysterious and powerful. ---a festive processional on the ancient melody arranged by Scott Watson---explores both aspects. Beginning quietly, the modal tune emerges over a chant drone with rustic, medieval percussion. Before long, the piece takes on the joyous character alluded to in the tune's most familiar English text setting, "On This Day Earth Shall Ring" (written by composer, Jane Joseph, a student of Gustav Holst). As the work draws to an ebullient close, all the stops are pulled with resounding brass and ringing metallic percussion! Whether used as a striking concert opener or a jubilant final selection, will add festive lan to your winter/holiday program! (3:28) This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

Cold Brook March - John O'Reilly
is perfect for your band's first Spring Concert. The ranges are comfortable for all instruments and the second clarinets never cross the break. Fun, syncopated rhythms provide a great deal of interest throughout. Short percussion solos introduce both the first strain and the second strain which is in the contrasting relative minor key. The break up strain pits the woodwinds against the brass with the percussion section holding it all together. (Correlates to , Book 1, Page 32) This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

Olympia - Brian Balmages
This powerful fanfare captures the spirit of Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games. The opening figure in the percussion is reminiscent of Aaron Copland and introduces the opening theme. As the theme seamlessly develops, the piece picks up tempo as snippets of the fanfare theme are interjected between lyrical statements in the woodwinds. Great (and flexible) percussion writing adds depth to the work. In addition to the regular part, an optional advanced snare drum part is included for accomplished percussionists. Bold sounds yet extremely playable!

The Woodwork Factory - Mekel Rogers
A very different selection for your next concert! The Woodwork Factory uses a variety of wooden percussion instruments to evoke the mechanical operations of a woodworking shop. Easy rhythms layer together to create a complex web of percussion colors while wind players give wonderful stylistic and dynamic contrasts. A composition that sounds a lot more difficult than it is to play, this piece will leave a great impression on students and audiences alike.
