Spirited Away - Joe Hisaishi
This is an arrangement of Ghibli's Anime film, "Spirited Away". It consists of six themes including No-Face, One Summer Day, The Bottomless Pit, Yubaba's Panic, Always with Me, and Reprise. I also added an alternate introduction using The Dragon Boy. The No-Face opener is somewhat avant-garde with technical difficulties so select the opening that is best suited to your ensemble. The arrangement concept was created by Mr. Tomoki Ubata of Ina Gakuen Sr. High School. His wonderfully crafted ideas always impress me. Especially, in the arrangement, mallet percussion and piano are effectively used to sound like a music box and the lyrical melody of Reprise is superimposed. This scene is the best part of the entire arrangement and is very emotional. All these fine melodies from the film transport both audience and performers to the fantastic world of anime. Agon - James Curnow
Grade 1 literature acts as something of a bridge between beginner literature and "real" music for the nascent musician. With that in mind, it is critical to choose just the right Grade 1 compositions as your group develops. As something of a competition for musical dominance between the Brasses, Woodwinds, and Percussion sections, AGON may be the perfect choice for your festival opening number. Each section, in fact every player, is shown to be an important part of the ensemble. Both smooth and marked playing are called for, while many stylistic and dynamic contrasts complete the recipe for a great young band showpiece.Compelling!

With brilliant woodwind passages, colorful percussion and a strong melodic statement, this exciting work draws inspiration from the music of the early Greek Orthodox Church. The music is largely characterized by its brisk, free-flowing quality. As the melodic content passes through several sections of the ensemble, many variations in style and tonal color can be heard. MusicWorks - Grade 3 Commissioned for the All Iowa Middle School Honor Band, here is an exuberant work that features dynamic ensemble passages, layering effects, and extensive percussion scoring. Richard's masterful development of repetitive rhythmic motives makes this sound more difficult than it really is. A contrasting middle section uses brief solos for alto sax and flute over a rich harmonic texture. A powerful statement for band. (5:10)

MusicWorks - Grade 1 The magic of Cuban carnaval music is the basis for this lively and very infectious easy work. Listen as the parade slowly approaches and the trumpets lead the ensemble with the main theme. Following this are question and answer statements typical of the style and a feature spot for percussion (who will have a field day with the unique instruments). This energetic new work fuses the percussion of street musicians, the wind and brass colors of modern jazz, and the form and structure of classical music. Percussionists play everything from plastic buckets to clay flowerpots while laying down a heavily syncopated groove. There is an open section that allows any instrument you desire the unique opportunity to show off their improvisational skills in a wind ensemble setting.
