Some of his marches actually were created from music originally written for an operetta, From Maine to Oregon, based on musical themes from Sousas operetta, The Glass Blower, which was renamed The American Maid. This new edition is created from the original parts as played by the Sousa Band performing under the direction of "The March King" himself.

1879 was a very eventful year for John Philip Sousa. He was a successful conductor, conducting Gilbert and Sullivans musical comedy, H.M.S. Pinafore, the year before he became the leader of the United States Marine Band, and it was the year he got married. It was also the year he composed Resumption March. The title was a reference to the resumption of the United States to use gold and silver coins following the post-Civil War inflation and depression. The march was published the same year in Philadelphia by the J. W. Pepper music publishing firm.

To celebrate the 350th anniversary of the Stadtmusikkapelle Wilten in Innsbruck Philip Sparke composed Wilten Festival Overture. A bold fanfare, led by the horns, forms the opening of the work from which an expressive theme unfolds until the full band reaches a climax. Short solo statements from saxophone, horn and trumpet lead to a recapitulation of this theme which melts into a rhythmic Vivo. A robust melody is is then played by the clarinets and taken up by the whole band before a legato figure leads to a cantabile theme, again presented by the clarinets. The original Vivo melody reappears before the opening fanfare is briefly heard and the work comes to an end with ashort Coda. A great experience for the whole band!
