Romance (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob
This simple little romance was written in the style of a Catalan folk song. It is entirely original but was undoubtedly influenced by the arrangements of Catalan folk songs for guitar by Miguel Llobet (1878-1938). Typical of the style, the tune is in 6/8 with a gentle lilt and has just one rather refined outburst of passion before retreating back into its shell. Duration: 3.30

Lightning Strike (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob
This march was commissioned by the Royal Air Force Halton Area Voluntary Band to mark their move to Air Command at RAF High Wycombe. The compositional approach to it is reasonably conventional with echoes of the rhythmic cells of the RAF March Past but balanced with some sections imbued with rhythmic energy. There is also a typically broad trio melody which seems to be the quintessential trademark of an RAF march.Duration: 3.30

Golden Lullaby (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob
This lyrical little piece started life as a song on the subject of gold but I wanted to see if it would stand alone as an instrumental piece. The gentle lilt of the melody suggests a lullaby although the texture of the piece builds in an un-lullaby-like fashion towards the end. There is a little 'white-note' dissonance but it is basically traditional in its language. Duration: 3.40

You Left Me Reeling (Clarinet Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob
A fun and challenging solo for clarinet and band. This fast and increasingly frantic solo started life as an attempt to capture the quintessential spirit of Irish Reels. It's a real work-out for the soloist, not that the rest of the band remains completely unscathed. The reels appear in various guises and the dancing becomes more frenzied as the pace accelerates to the end. Duration: 3.30

Wake-up Call (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob
Wake-up Call is an exciting concert opener. Propelled out of bed at 6 am. by the raucous wake-up call, we are immediately caught up in the manic impetus of the day. The music progresses through several changes of mood linked by the 7/8 theme but the high energy never drops. There are rhythmic challenges in this vivacious concert opener and everyone gets something to play, but the technical challenges are not extreme.Duration: 4.45

The Lark in the Morning (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob
A vibrant folk dance set for full band. This is one of several folk tunes associated with this title. It's a jig in a minor key with suitable drumming which plays with and across (in hemiola style) the 6/8 rhythm. The setting is dramatic and intense while maintaining the feel of the jig. The outer sections are balanced by a quieter section which momentarily takes the heat out of the music before the dance takes over again and builds to a conclusion.Duration: 3.15

Phoenix Rising (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob
A brilliant overture reflecting the strength and renewal of the phoenix. The phoenix symbolises transformation, death and rebirth in its fire and this overture starts with great positivity as the main 'phoenix' figure is stated. The brass pronounces its emphatic fanfare intertwined with the spiralling woodwind figures and then the music bursts into an energetic fast tempo. There are contrasting darker episodes and a lyrical middle section before the phoenix finally re-emerges triumphant.Duration: 7.30

La Chica Sin Nombre (Trombone Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob
A vibrant, rhythmic solo for trombone and band. La Chica sin Nombre was written in March 2020 at the request of Brett Baker. He wanted something in Latin style so I chose to go for a Mambo-type dance piece. This obviously works best with band accompaniment where I would always ask for Conga drums and Mambo Bell/Timbales rather than drum kit. The piece needs to be played with an appropriate feel for Latin music. It should sound light and easy to play but has a few tricky moments! Duration: 4.15

Hope Springs Eternal (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob
A concert overture with interest and colour for the whole band, Hope Springs Eternal was written during the seemingly interminable lockdowns of 2020. The intention was to compose some positive music as an encouragement during difficult times. It starts with a strident statement before turning fairly shortly to a more reflective response from the woodwind. The opening returns and this time the response is broader before it builds to a peak and unleashes the faster music that follows. Several melodic fragments are introduced before a minor key theme is established. The music becomes lighter as it progresses until it reaches the cheerful and melodic trio section. The minor section makes a brief return before being forever banished by the final statement of the affirmative opening music.Duration: 6.45
