    Wings - Vince Gassi

The men and women of the Royal Canadian Air Force are the inspiration behind this original composition by Vince Gassi. The first work in his , it takes off with a bright, spirited theme first heard in the flutes. The rest of the ensemble soon joins in the maneuvers and offers a fuller tactical report. Clarinets take over with dignity, providing a lyrical contrast, and are supported by a stately accompaniment. It isn't long before we start to feel the "spirit of adventure" building to a contrasting section conveying images of stealth and intrigue. Covert operations lead finally to a restatement of the opening theme by the brass with flute and clarinet obligato. Interlace with fragments from the covert section and we are carried to a soaring conclusion. If you are looking for a spirited concert opener or closer, look no further! Shakespeare Pictures - Nigel Hess

While Music Director and House Composer for the Royal Shakespeare Company, Nigel Hess wrote music for over twenty productions. Hess has taken music from three works to form a 12-minute suite called Shakespeare Pictures. It begins with the boisterous overture to Much Ado About Nothing, followed by a contrasting slow movement depicting the beautiful statue from A Winter's Tale before displaying huge pomp of Caesar's Rome with The Entry to the Senate. This work is ideal for bands that have played and enjoyed Hess's work East Coast Pictures. This wind band suite was commissioned in 2008 by Birmingham Symphonic Winds. The original music is now expanded and re-orchestrated to form a new three-movement suite for symphonic wind orchestra.

To The Stars! - Nigel Hess

'To the Stars!' is the fruit of a unique collaboration between Nigel Hess and the children of several Bedfordshire schools who were asked to contribute ideas for a libretto based on the themes of space travel and exploration. The work was then performed during a concert at the Royal Albert Hall showcasing the work of Bedfordshire County Music Services. The unusual combination of children's choir and symphonic wind band is wonderfully exciting, and To the Stars! provides an incomparable performing experience for both band and choir, and is also technically demanding and challenging. After a rousing introduction, we hear a countdown to our rocket's 'blast off', and suddenly we are heading out to the planets where we meet aliens with blue eyes and pink ears! After a brief but terrifying skirmish with a black hole we head off to a 'world of many wonders', and as we leave our solar system behind, the piece finishes with a spectacular shout of 'Fly with us - to the stars!'.

    Scramble! - Nigel Hess

Commissioned in 1994 by the Royal Air Force, 'Scramble!' Is a concert overture for symphonic wind band inspired by images of the RAF's airfields during the Battle of Britain, immortalised for ever in such films as Reach for the Skies. The pastoral opening depicts the lull before the storm: the young pilots sitting in wicker chairs outside their barracks on a sunlit morning. The peace is, of course, deceptive, suddenly amid siren sounds, there is a shout of 'Scramble!', and a rush to the waiting planes. In no time at all the squadron is airborne, heading for a skirmish over the English Channel and beyond. A lyrical central section featuring a solo cornet depicts the stillness many pilots described as they flew to engage the enemy, before the battle breaks out once more. For those who returned, it would be only a short while before, once again, they would hear the familiar shout of 'Scramble!'
