Overture on French Carols (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Lane, Philip - Noble, Paul
The idea for this work sprang from a visit to Bayeux in the weeks before Christmas in 2001 when carols were being played through loudspeakers in the streets to accompany seasonal shoppers. The overture was premiered by the BBC Concert Orchestra in 2003 and subsequently broadcast on BBC Radio 3. The work has been commercially recorded by the Royal Ballet Sinfonia conducted by Gavin Sutherland. The carols employed in this overture are: Il est n, le divin enfant, Patapan, Nol nouvelet, Quelle est cette odeur agreeable, and Masters in this hall. Some are brought together in the final section with Quittez, pasteurs as additional counterpoint in the horns. This piece will be an important addition to seasonal repertoire, and certainly in a setting that will be fresh and inspiring for audiences.

New Forest March (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Vinson, Johnnie
Here is a terrific march for young players written in the traditional British style. The opening strains are folk-like in nature with underlying modal harmonies, while the stately trio is reminiscent of the processional style of Elgar and other British composers. The New Forest refers to a region in southern England established as a royal hunting preserve by William the Conqueror around the year 1079, which has remained largely unchanged since ancient times.Duration: 2:15

At the Feast of Stephen (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Watson, Scott
This novel setting of the traditional carol Good King Wenceslas will musically transport you and your students to the royal Christmas banquet hall of a medieval king! The old carol tells the story of a legendary 10th-century monarch, Duke Wenceslas of Bohemia, who went out in the severe cold to give charity to the poor on December 26, also known as St. Stephens Day. The well-known 13th-century carol tune, as well as additional original material in period style, vividly conjures a lively celebration of Christmas in the high Middle Ages.Duration: 2.30

Time Lines (Concert Band - Score only) - Turnbull, Kit
The time line is a western musicological device that allows us to define many of the rhythms used in sub-Saharan music. It is essentially a 12-beat pattern that can be subdivided as 6x2, 2x6, 4x3, or 3x4, which generates many of the polyrhythms that are common in African music. Time Lines is a single continuous work made up of four contrasting sections which are based on various aspects of African dance and choral music. The slow introduction introduces many of the rhythms that the piece is based on and is followed by a fast section which quotes a South African hymn. Abasundu Nabamhlope (the first line of which translates as 'Black and whites, let them give thanks together'. The chorale section which follows makes use of phrases from the hymn Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika (Lord Bless Africa) which was written in 1897 and has since been adopted as the national anthem of several countries in southern Africa. The final allegro section sees the drawing together of the various dance and choral elements used in the piece with the percussion section playing rhythmic patterns generated by the time line.Duration: 13:30Recorded on QPRM151D TIME LINES: Great British Music for Wind Band Vol.12 (Royal Northern College of Music)
