Zion Hears the Watchmen Singing (Zion hrt die Wchter singen) is the fourth of seven movements of Bach's cantata Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme ('Awake, calls the voice to us'), BWV 140, also known as Sleepers Wake. It is regarded as one of his most mature and popular sacred cantatas. It is written in the style of a chorale prelude, with the phrases of the chorale, sung as a cantus firmus by the tenors (or by the tenor soloist), entering intermittently against a famously lyrical melody played in this arrangement in unison principally by the woodwinds. Bach composed the chorale cantata in Leipzig for the 27th Sunday after Trinity and first performed it on 25 November 1731. This arrangement represents one in the Series of Band Arrangements compatible with David Willcocks' Carols for Choirs.

The William Blake (1757-1827) poem, The Lamb, featured in this movement, is a poignant message relating to the precious lives of our children. In the setting for band alone, the children's choir part is set for solo trumpet, and the darker beginning (Agnus Dei, miserere nobis) is further enhanced by muted brass and the pulsating heart-beat of the bass drum, felt, but rarely heard.

Birthday Madrigals was written in 1995 to celebrate the seventy-fifth birthday of the great jazz pianist, George Shearing. This arrangement is written for combined band and choir, but may be performed by band alone. In honour of George Shearing's noted style, a vibes part has been added to this arrangement, as well as an optional piano part. The original setting was a suite of five movements. The arranger has chosen three of the movements, numbers 1, 3 and 5, because of their similarity in style. This is a special opportunity for Concert Bands, or combined Concert Bands and Choirs, to perform in a true jazz medium, featuring a set drummer and string bass along with the full band.

Down by the riverside is a spiritual that was sung by slaves in the South as a work song. It dates back to before the American Civil War. John Rutter's lively arrangement of this barnstorming American folk-song builds up from a quiet opening to a triumphant conclusion. This arrangement is a faithful adaptation of the original orchestration for chorus and orchestra, but it is arranged so that it may be performed by band alone. The style is an authentic toe-tapping early jazz creation that relates to the 'jitterbug' era, and the band arrangement is complete with an optional jazz clarinet solo as well as a rousing chorus by the sax section. The piano part is cued if needed. This is a perfect opportunity to get the entire band 'swinging', and could even entice a 'One mo' time!' finale.

Mass of the Children represents something new in the composer's work insofar as it was conceived with an integral role for a children's choir alongside an adult mixed choir, two soloists, and orchestra (now band). The role of the children's choir is to add a further dimension to the traditional Latin Mass sung by the adult choir, sometimes commenting, sometimes amplifying the meaning and mood. His musical understanding, sense of melody, harmony and orchestration are oftentimes fully capable of telling the story even without the text. One night in 1328, the German mystic and Dominican monk Henrich Suso (or Seuse) had a vision in which he joined angels dancing as the angels sang to him Nun singet und seid froh or In Dulci Jubilo. In Suso's biography (or perhaps autobiography), it was written: Now this same angel came up to the Servant [Suso] brightly, and said that God had sent him down to him, to bring him heavenly joys amid his sufferings; adding that he must cast off all his sorrows from his mind and bear them company, and that he must also dance with them in heavenly fashion. Then they drew the Servant by the hand into the dance, and the youth began a joyous song about the infant Jesus, which runs thus: 'In dulci jubilo', etc. In Dulci Jubilo is among the oldest and most famous of the macaronic songs, one which combines Latin and a vernacular language such as English or German. Five hundred years later, this carol became the inspiration for the 1853 English paraphrase by John Mason Neale, Good Christian Men, Rejoice. Perhaps the earliest English version appeared c.1540. That popularity has endured for nearly 700 years. It's the rare contemporary collection of Christmas carols that doesn't contain a carol based on this ancient jewel.
