The Blue Window - Robert W. Smith

Inspired by "The Blue Window" by Henri Matisse, this lyrical statement for alto saxophone and band is a subdued departure from the more colorful and powerful movements of "Three Conversations With Matisse". Reflective and poignant, your soloist, ensemble and audience will be quietly enthralled in a musical setting that harkens to days gone by. Simply stated....beautiful.

    Le Cygne - Camille Saint-Saens

Le carnaval des animaux (The Carnival of the Animals) is a humorous musical suite of fourteen movements by French composer Camille Saint-Sans. Le Cygne is the 13th movement of the suite, originally scored for two pianos and cello: the lushly romantic cello solo (which evokes the swan elegantly gliding over the water) is played over rippling sixteenths in one piano and rolled chords in the other (said to represent the swan's feet, hidden from view beneath the water, propelling it along). It has become a staple of the cello repertoire and one of the most well-known movements of the suite. Many other arrangements of this movement have also been published, with solo instruments ranging from flute to alto saxophone. Dutch arranger Andreas van Zoelen arranged this movement for solo cello with accompaniment of a small Wind Ensemble.

    Saxcapade - David A. Myers

This saxophone feature has all the elements you can imagine to bring the house down in your next concert. A rock groove sets the stage for your entire sax section. Your audience is sure to get involved as the rest of the band starts clapping to the beat. The slight use of syncopation provides some great teaching opportunities at this level. A great way to change the pace of your next concert.

Under mnen (Fra Den unge Fleksnes) - Christian Engebretsen

This has become a Christmas song that has its roots in a love duet between the young Fleksnes and classmate Victoria. The class will be competing with a duet in a song competition. The text gives hope of love and links it to Christmas traditions. "A Dream of Christmas, About Love" is the first line of the text. "The Young Fleksnes" runned as advent calender on TV Norge in 2010. This arrangement feature an Alto Saxophone player and a euphonium / baritone / trombone player. If you should choose to use the soloist parts from the Brass band version for Flugelhorn and Euphonium, please use both parts, because some of the phrases has been changed. Please be aware of thedynamics between soloists and accompaniment. Adjust the dynamics according to the musicians in the ensemble.

Den store dagen - Benny Borg

This beautiful song contains a huge contrast between the hopeful and the disappointing. A mother has her birthday and is waiting her children to celebrate it. Each verse starts optimistically, but the short chorus is characterized by the disappointment, that everyone calls, and cannot come. This has been tried recreated musically, mostly in the last two choruses, as it dawns on her that she will not receive a visit. It's a beautiful tune, but with a serious message that it's easy to take someone for granted. One of the elements the musicians came up with after rehearsal, was that they really liked the change between the ballad parts with even eights and the swing parts. This also gives the piece a sense of "parlando" character, which tells a story, and is therefore important to focus. It is not quite simple, as the melody also in those parts with even eights has some triplet rhythms. Therefore, this is a topic you can work on.Regarding instrumentation, Flugelhorn, Alto Saxophone and Euphonium have important roles, in addition to the rest of the first parts in the Band. The arrangement is written so you are not depending on "special" instruments. Important details are also often duplicated so you can use the arrangement for a smaller Wind Band.It is also possible to use a vocal soloist, but then you must soften the instruments that holds the melody.

Heart Of The City - Gary P. Gilroy

The energy generated by this work is virtually electric! This most singular work is alive with the spirit and sounds of New York City. One can sense the busy sidewalks, the zooming traffic and the "cool" side as a sultry alto saxophone solo transports the listener to one of the citys jazz clubs. A return of the opening musical material takes you to the streets and drives relentlessly to an intensely satisfying conclusion!
