The Approaching Coast - David Marlatt

Adventure, pirates, and stormy weather. Let this short, exciting piece take your audience on a seafaring ride through the crashing ocean. Energetic, crisp, and punctuated chords are found in the first section which is followed by a calm, smooth, and quiet contrast using a pentatonic scale which gives it a slightly Asian feel. The aggressive articulated rhythms return and this work comes to a dramatic conclusion with both themes played simultaneously. Enjoy the adventure on the wild seas as you see . . . the approaching coast. by David Marlatt is written for concert band.

Mango Tango - David M. Martin

A pleasant rendition of a tango for grade 1 band. Once the students have clapped the opening unison rhythm, they will be amazed at how easily it translates to the horn, making this a very fun piece to play and to hear. Some question/answer segments between brass and woodwinds allow the director to stress the importance of listening to musical lines across the band to see how it all fits together as a whole. A terrific addition to the young band repertoire.

    Ding Dong Merrily on High

provides ultimate flexibility for ensembles with incomplete instrumentation or odd combinations. These pieces are playable by as few as 5 woodwind, brass or string players with or without percussion. This creates the opportunity for a mixed quintet to perform these titles but also allows for performance for 10-15 players up to full a band/orchestra with parts doubling. Great for music camps, contest use or any band room that has non-standard instrumentation. For many reasons, Christmas means joy! "Ding Dong Merrily on High" is a wonderful musical snapshot of the whole season. In this arrangement, we hear church bells chiming, voices uniting, and see people smiling. It features great tutti, instrument family, and small ensemble moments to show off all aspects of the band.

Feel the Fury - David Marlatt

This energetic piece is a simulation of a horse race. All the emotions and thrill of a race can be felt in this work. This piece for very young band and optional choir was commissioned by Northern Dancer P.S., which was named after the famous Canadian racehorse. The snare and toms help to keep the horse moving forward while the winds perform the bold and stately theme. There is a moment of tension and suspense as the horse and rider can see they are not in the lead. But they triumph and the race is won!

Here is a useful fanfare for the opening of your next concert. Optional fermatas allow for announcements to be added as 'voice-overs.'
