See Rock City - Brant Karrick
is a fun, rock jam session for concert band! Fusing elements of rock, jazz, and funk styles, all sections of the band equally contribute familiar riffs, grooves, and melodies weaved throughout the three-part form---fast-funk-fun! Partly inspired by driving through the southeastern part of the United States, particularly Tennessee, it is hard to miss the words painted on barns, birdhouses, and billboards---See Rock City! The attraction atop Lookout Mountain near Chattanooga displays the region's quirky sense of humor as well as its breathtaking beauty. Whether looking at seven states, standing under a waterfall, or walking through a cavern full of glowing gnomes, Rock City, like this namesake piece, is just pure, simple, fun.

See the Conquering Hero Comes - George Freidrich Handel / arr. Edward Kennedy
was composed by the great baroque composer George Friedrich Handel and is a chorus from his popular Oratorio . The work was composed in 1746 and was first performed in Covent Garden, London in 1747. In 1884, Edmund Louis Budry wrote new words to this chorus to create the very stirring and well known hymn "Thine Be the Glory." This theme and variations arrangement of Handel's famous piece features all sections of the band and makes a very effective concert opener or finale for young bands. "Effective as an opener or closer, this is a satisfying way to introduce students to a significant composer." -

Mammoth Mountain Suite - Haakon Esplo
Mammoths were a family of elephants that, with one exception, died out at the end of the last ice age. Their closest living relative is the Asian elephant. In many places in the world one can find mammoth remains. In Norway (especially in Gudbrandsdalen), 20 discoveries of teeth and skeletal remains have been made after mammoths that lived here between 40,000 and 50,000 years ago. On cave paintings and carvings you can see many pictures of mammoths with other animals. Pictures of killed mammoths have also been found with humans. Mammoth Moutain Suite describes a bunch of hunters looking for mammoths. Imagine the majestic animals, what it felt like to see the herd in themountains and what it sounded like when the 6 ton heavy and 3.5 meter tall mammoths were on the run.

Chorus and March - Georg Friedrich Händel
Handel's oratorio Judas Maccabaeus was composed in a period of not much more than a month in 1746. As with the famous Messiah, use was made of previously composed material and indeed See, the Conquering Hero Comes! was grafted from another oratorio about Joshua. This arrangement of See the conquering Hero Comes will bring a great sense of ceremony to any concert.
