Nativity - James Curnow
Tender and expressive! Two of the most popular settings of the Away in a Manger text give the audience pause to reflect on the meaning of the season. This is one of those beautiful arrangements that is a worthwhile endeavor for bands at every level of ability. Younger groups can work on shaping phrases, balancing chords, blending the ensemble and so much more, while advanced groups have the mastery to explore their own deeply expressive and freely conducted interpretation. For groups in the middle, remember, it's always good to include a performance piece that does not require too much "note chasing" so the subtler aspects of the musical art can be examined and reinforced.Charming!

Song of Hope - Jan Van der Roost
2011 was a disastrous year for Japan: on March 11 the northeast of the country suffered a violent earthquake, which triggered a huge tsunami and caused massive damage to people and the environment. The ensuing problems with the nuclear reactor atFukushima only increased the misery: a black day in the country's history...One almost inevitable consequence of such dramatic circumstances is the particular damage suffered by the cultural arts. And so it was in Japan: various high school wind orchestras in the effected areas lost their practice rooms and/or instruments. It will take a long time before the damage suffered is repaired - and it will take great effort to overcome the psychological effects, too. Focusing on the latter, Yutada Nishida (director of The Bandwagon radio program) asked a few composers fora simple work that could be played by many orchestras. It just so happened that the Osakan Philharmonic Winds (with whom Jan Van der Roost had conducted a concert exclusively of his own works on September 25th) had had a similar idea. This concert saw the baptism of Song of Hope. This pieceimmediately struck a chord with musicians and audience alike: it begins bleakly in the low register and evolves to a more open, optimistic close. There really is hope for better times!

Pure Imagination (from )
With its message of endless possibilities and dreams fulfilled, this piece, from the 1971 Academy-award nominated film score of Roald Dahl's (1964), by songwriting team Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley, has remained popular since the 1970s---and even more so today, or so says the more than 5.5 million views on YouTube. The tune surfaces three times in the movie, first during the opening title music, then as the feature number by Gene Wilder as he leads his assembled golden ticket winners into the chocolate room, and finally, as part of the "Wonkavator" music at the end. Great fun for all generations, and all generations to come! This arrangement provides a dramatic opportunity to teach expression. A charming and musical choice, it is memorable and heartwarming. Symphony 1 (Movement 3) - Gustav Mahler / arr. Paul Sylvester
There are very few arrangements of Mahler's music so this arrangement for band from his first Symphony is quite significant. Paul Sylvester has added his brilliant arrangement of Movement 3 to the Eighth Note Publications catalogue. Previously released for concert band was Movement 2 and this new arrangement matches the difficulty level so now two movements of the Titan Symphony can be performed together!

Meditation on St Clement - David Chaulk
Inevitably, comparisons will be made with Philip Wilby's setting of the same hymn tune so It's interesting to note that this arrangement was done in 1983 - ten years prior to Wilby's very fine arrangement. It's being published now in response to many requests from bands around the world and will make an excellent addition to the sacred repertoire of brass and concert bands.
