    Jungle - Thomas Doss

In this fascinating piece we experience an exciting adventure in the jungle. The entrance into the "green hell" turns out to be very dangerous with wild monkeys and the roaring of elephants accompanying our way through the dark forest. There seems to be something lurking behind every tree and all of a sudden, a horde of savage cannibals appears. A wild hunt sets off and we escape at the last second by jumping from a cliff into the savage water below. Exotic birds welcome us in a new landscape and from somewhere in the distance we can hear a bamboo flute playing. This is a journey of no return.... The effects (elephants, wild monkeys, exotic birds and rain) should be producedwith much creativity - individual ideas are always desirable and welcome.

Fanfare for the Champions - Otto M. Schwarz

Fanfare for the Champions was commissioned by the municipal concert band of Landeck under the direction of Helmut Schmid on the occasion of the 375th anniversary of the band. The orchestra, which premiered Nostradamus (a key work of the composer), and which also commissioned Mantua - Freedom of the Eagle, has forged a friendship with the composer over a period of many years. This orchestra has participated in the major European competitions and has always performed with distinction--thus the title of the work Fanfare for the Champions. The fanfare, which is written in a style typical for the composer, should convey a feeling ofhappiness: the feeling to have created or accomplished something special. Sinfonietta No 3 - Philip Sparke

In each of the four movements of this major work for concert band, the composer has tried to capture in music something of the spirit of this beautiful Swiss town of Rheinfelden, which lies on the banks of the Rhein. The opening movement, Promenade, sees woodwind and brass alternating short melodic fragments leading to a noble melody from the horns. The dreamy Ballad features a saxophone solo and chorale-like melody. This leads, via a four bar Interlude, to the Scherzo which takes the form of a moto perpetuo.

Four Norfolk Dances - Philip Sparke

Norfolk is one of the most beautiful counties in England, famous for its charming villages and boundless broads, a popular centre for sailing holidays. It is also the home of one of the best known of all British composers, Sir Malcolm Arnold. The date of the premiere of this piece was to fall close to his 80th birthday, so Philip Sparke decided to write something of a birthday tribute. Some of Arnold's best-loved orchestral works are his sets of dances: there are two sets of English Dances, Four Scottish Dances, Four Cornish Dances etc., most of which have been arranged for concert band at one time or another. Philip Sparke thought it would be appropriate for the concert band tohave its own set of dances and wrote Four Norfolk Dances very much in the style of Arnold's suites.

    Simple Sarabande - Philip Sparke

The sarabande originated in the early 17th century and is a stately dance in triple time. It was popular in France and Spain but as a dance it quickly spread throughout the courts of Europe and the style was soon adopted into instrumental music in dance suites for solo instruments as well as orchestra. Something of this style has influenced Simple Sarabande and although its harmonic language is perhaps more up-to-date it could be seen as a 'period piece'.
