    Half-Past Two - By Randall D. Standridge

"Half-Past Two" is a rock piece for young band intended to reinforce and deepen the students' understanding of dotted quarter/eighth note rhythms, providing a vehicle for this concept that is fun and memorable for both students and audiences. The title is both an homage to time-inspired rock songs ("25 or 6 to 4," "Rock Around the Clock," "Midnight Hour," etc. . . .) and a nod to the concept being taught---placing a note halfway past beat two. Napoli (Score) - By Hermann Bellstedt / arr. Donald Hunsberger

Born in Germany, Hermann Bellstedt immigrated to America in 1867, where his family settled in Cincinnati. A prodigy on the cornet, he played with Patrick Gilmore as cornet soloist and assistant to the famous Ben Bolt, and, in 1904, joined the Sousa Band, playing alongside Walter Rogers and Herbert L. Clarke. Bellstedt's variations on Napoli feature the popular Neopolitan song "Finiculi, Finicula" (composed by Luigi Denza in 1880) that celebrated the funicular railway built up the side of Mt. Vesuvius in 1880. Other popular Amalfi Coast songs include "'O Solo Mio" and "Torna a Sorriento." A variety of solo textures, whimsical to intense, are demonstrated by this Donald Hunsberger arrangement dedicated to Wynton Marsalis as a part of the "Carnaval" project. A grandiose opportunity to feature your cornet or trumpet soloist!

Academic Festival Overture Op. 80, Critical Edition - By Johannes Brahms / arr. Carl Simpson

Brahms composed this work during the summer of 1880 as a tribute to the University of Breslau for conferring on him an honorary doctorate of philosophy. Known for his love of irony, Brahms based this overture on a number of familiar melodies resulting in what he called a "very boisterous potpourri of student songs." Included is Was kommt dort von der Hh ("What Comes There from on Yonder?"), sung by upperclassmen to chide first year students, a German patriotic song Wir hatten gebauet ein stattliches Haus ("We have built this stately house"), and a triumphant finale on Gaudeamus igitur ("So Let Us Rejoice") that was commonly performed at many European high school and university graduation ceremonies.
