Tudor Sketches - William Owens
This magnificent three-movement work pays homage to the House of Tudor, a European royal house that ruled England and Ireland in the 16th century. A blithely woodwind anthem and a rollicking dance heralds in Hampton Court, a principal residence of King Henry VIII. Good Queen Bess, the regal second movement, depicts the court of Queen Elizabeth I. The intrepid Hunting at Chobham portrays an aggressive game of chase in the vast 500 acre hunting park held by the Tudors for nearly 70 years. Fantastic writing!

Der Erlknig - Scott Watson
Der Erlknig, or "The Elf King," is based on Johann Goethe's late 18th-century poem of the same name in which a father and his young son ride home on horseback one dark and eerie night. The father tries to calm the increasingly fearful son by explaining everything the boy reports as simply leaves rustling in the wind or willows moving in the fog. Nonetheless, the father rides faster and faster home only to find the boy is dead in his arms when they arrive. Goethe's dark and gothic tale is brought to spine-tingling life in this harrowing, fast-paced tone poem for band. (3:20) This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

March for a Norwegian Penguin - Douglas E. Wagner
A happy march, this original setting was inspired by the gift of a King Penguin to Scotland's Edinburgh Zoo in 1913. Even though there really isn't an actual Norwegian penguin, this particular penguin-mascot has even been honored with knighthood. The story is just as intriguing as the music itself. A Canadian Christmas
Get ready for an abundance of merriment! This work features carols that have been traditionally sung in Canada for many years and will help to create a spirit of mirth in no time. It opens with the joyous strains of "Il Est N Le Divin Enfant (He is Born, The Divine Child)" and continues with the plaintive and modal "Nol Nouvelet (Sing We Now of Christmas)." "The Huron Carol ('Twas In the Moon of Wintertime)" is then presented with remnants of "Nol Nouvelet" cleverly woven in. The dramatic conclusion develops brief dialogue between "Good King Wenceslas" and "Il Est N Le Divin Enfant" that brings the work to an exuberant and powerful close. Juxtaposing the lyrical and expressive with the joyous and cheerful in this masterful arrangement will add a little touch of Canada to your next holiday concert.
