PURCELL VARIANTS (Advanced Concert Band) - Meechan, Peter
Purcell Variants is based on Purcell's Queen Mary's Funeral Music, which consists of four canzonas, two elegies and an anthem. The first movement begins by sounding some of Purcell's original music in the trombones and horns, underpinned by a timpani roll with the woodwind articulating the beginnings and endings of the phrases. This leads into a cadenza for trumpet and alto saxophone before the movement heads in different directions, leading us to its mysterious end, where the original music is sounded this time in the 'stabs' of the clarinets and alto saxophone. Originally composed for the funeral of Queen Mary in 1695, Purcell's original funeral music was used later that same year for Purcell's own funeral - he died aged only 34. The second movement is an elegy, inspired by this story. After an introduction (a disjointed last post), the main melody of the movement is introduced by the solo euphonium, with other solo roles for flute, oboe and alto saxophone. This is then taken over by the trumpets who lead us into the middle section of the movement. This is a quasi funeral march, inspired by the image of Purcell's coffin being taken to its final resting point. The main melody returns in the flute, oboe and alto saxophone, this time more elaborated. The movement ends with a snare drum fading away - perhaps a metaphor. The Finale is a fast and furious movement combining thematic material from the two previous movements with new rhythmical ideas. This takes us through to the final passage - the triumphant return of Purcell's original theme. Duration: 13.00

Remembrance Day Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
Remembrance Day (Totengedenken) is a chorale-like piece in memory of those who have died in service. Jacob de Haan composed this work for a concert by the symphonic wind orchestra Symphonic Winds, which he conducted in Germany on Volkstrauertag (national remembrance day). The composition is based on a text from Totengedenken (Commemoration of Those Who Have Died). This narrative text is provided in four languages, and is intended to be spoken (using a microphone) ad libitum during the performance. Choir parts are also available to complement the performance. 0:04:30

S.P.Q.R. (Concert Band) - Woolfenden, Guy
Includes:I. Fosse WayII. NotturnoIII. Via AppiaS. P. Q. R. was commissioned as part of the Warwickshire County Council centenary celebrations in 1988 and my response was to delve even further back than a mere one hundred years, to encompass the Roman occupation of Britain, which lasted 350 years from AD 43. The standard of the Roman legions often carried the letters S. P. Q. R: Senatus Populusque Romanus - The Senate and People of Rome.Among the lasting monuments to this long occupation is the amazing system of roads, one of which, the Fosse Way, bisects the county of Warwickshire from south-west to north-east. Four of the major areas of modern Warwickshire: Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwick, Rugby, and Nuneaton and Bedworth, lie adjacent to this mighty thoroughfare.S. P. Q. R. attempts to juxtapose and contrast the ancient and indissoluble links between rural and urban Warwickshire and the might of ancient Rome. Thus the river Avon becomes a tributary of the Tiber and the Fosse Way joins the Via Appia: All roads lead to Rome!

SALUTE TO GEORGE M. COHAN (Programme Concert Band) - Keeley, Ed
This medley presents four of the biggest Cohan hits: I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy; Mary's a Grand Old Name; Give My Regards to Broadway; Over There. This last title has had great prominence in the UK recently with a pseudo operatic performance being used for a successful TV insurance advertisement 'Go Compare'. This took the song back to its roots as the first recording of it was by the great Italian tenor, Caruso.

Showdown for Band (Concert Band - Score and Parts)
Showdown for Band was written as a compulsory exercise for the Third International Light Music Competition at St. Gallen, Switzerland in 1998. The intention of the composer was to write a piece in a light music style that would at the same time challenge the various bands, particularly in the area of rhythm. The work is divided into four parts: Opening, Ballad, Finale and Ending. Using melodies that are easy on the ear and varied instrumentation, many facets of the entire band are displayed. The solo in the middle part can be played by either soprano or alto saxophone, or even by a flugel horn. The impressive composition contains many musical elements, which makes the work an especially suitable piece with which to open a light classical concert 0:07:36

SYMPHONY No.2 (Novello Symphonic) Score only - Bedford, David
Symphony No.2 contains four movements and a coda, all played without a break, following the traditional symphonic pattern. The Introduction presents the main thematic material of the piece which is characterized by rising and falling 5ths a semitone apart. The Quaver Machine has a repeated, relentless constant quaver pulse from the vibraphone. The harmony circles around only 3 chords and the section builds with more and more instruments being played in harmony and in canon. A shift in tonality gradually leads to Adagio, an almost opulently romantic presentation of the main theme with a rippling accompaniment. After a massive climax, the music leads to Finale with the main theme presented as an Ostinato gradually introducing the full band to another large climax. Gradually, everything quietens down for the Coda, a varied repetition of the Introduction but ending with a last reminiscence of the Adagio. Duration: 14 mins.

Tom Sawyer Suite (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Cesarini, Franco
During his childhood The Adventures of Tom Sawyer was the favourite book of the composer Franco Cesarini. With his memories of the magic of joy, fear and freedom, Cesarini seeks to bring the figures of the book to life musically in his Tom Sawyer Suite. Each of the first four movements describes a figure from the story. Tom Sawyer is depicted in the first movement, where the characteristic "cake walk" rhythm is used. The second movement depicts Huckleberry Finn. The third movement is slower, more expressively melancholic and is dedicated to Becky Thatcher. Then there is Injun Joe, who tries to catch Tom in the fourth movement with the fifth movement leading to a happy end.Duration: 12:00

Traffic (Concert Band - Score and Parts)
This piece describes the daily madness of traffic in a city full of cars, noise and exhaust fumes. Even in the countryside the 'monster on four wheels' has already arrived and is destroying idyllic villages. In the middle of the composition, we experience a traffic jam, where some drivers tend to behave in a very primitive way! This work is dedicated to all those who are affected by or are suffering from the overpowering proliferation of traffic. This work will 'drive' your audiences crazy with excitement !! 06:31

Trumpet Fiesta (Concert Band - Score and Parts)
Trumpet Fiesta spotlights four trumpet soloists. From the opening bars the music expresses a feeling of happiness. This swift and lively piece begins with a series of dynamic staccato passages from the soloists. The central section, in the minor key, contrasts with the beginning of the work and during this transition period there are only two solo trumpet parts. The first theme then quickly reappears before moving on to a peaceful and more melodic trio in which long and flowing melody lines allow the soloists to let the beautiful sound of the trumpet fully reveal itself. The sound pyramid then formed by the whole band leads this spectacular piece to a powerful finale. 03:12

Where there's Muck Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
The title is a popular saying in England. It means that's where the money is. "Where there's muck, there's power" is such a popular expression in the United Kingdom. The saying inspired Peter Martin to compose a highly attractive piece in four parts, consisting of contemporary dances that can also be performed separately. Let's dance! 05:15
