Diamond Concerto (Euphonium Concerto No.3) (Euphonium Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

Diamond Concerto was commissioned by Musikverein Morschied from Germany - Dr. Eric Grandjean, conductor - for a special concert featuring Steven Mead as guest soloist. Together they gave the world premiere on 28th April 2012 in the town theatre of Idar-Oberstein. The commission is a highlight in the 30-year friendship between composer and soloist, which has included many mutual CD projects and concerts and, now, a concerto. Sparke had Steven Mead's special euphonium sound in his head throughout the composition process and made free use of the variety of styles which the world-renowned virtuoso has made his own during his highly successful solo career. The village of Morschied lies to the west of Frankfurt am Main in the area known as the German Road of Precious Stones, which is famous for its thriving gem industry. Because of this it was decided to give the commission a local connection by choosing the title, Diamond Concerto. Each of the three movements is named after a famous diamond:Earth Star is rather stern in mood, opening with a free fantasy for the soloist over a static chord from the band. This leads to an Allegro Moderato in minor mode where small motives are gradually repeated and developed by both band and soloist.Ocean Dream uses a varied quote from the composer's Music for Battle Creek, including a melting slow melody that was originally written with Steven Mead in mind.Blue Heart was written, at Steven Mead's suggestion, in bebop style and takes the form of a jazz waltz. The quasi-improvisatory central section features a call-and-response passage for the soloist and upper woodwinds.Duration: 15:45

I Just Can't Stop Loving You (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Jackson, Michael - Hazama, Miho

This number topped the U.S. chart as the lead release single from Bad. Siedah Garrett, who sang the duet, was a protg of Quincy Jones with whom Michael tag-teamed for three solos on Off the Wall. (Garrett is also renowned as one of the writers of the song Man in the Mirror," the fourth single which carries a strong message.) Japanese fans still remember this song being performed as an encore during the Bad World Tour in 1987. The straightforward, sweet love song starts out quietly and gradually takes on heat, unfolding a wonderful musical sentiment. The performance of the arranged version also strikes the audience with an imposing world of sound comparable to that of a full orchestra.Duration: 5:00

Atropos (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Houben, Kevin

Atropos is one of the three goddesses of fate. She cuts the thread of life of a person whenever their time has come. The composition is film-like and presents challenges in sound, balance and rhythm. The work opens in a quiet mood in which the themes are presented before finally all the elements are combined and we are led to a sparkling apotheosis that is demanding in its melodic phrasing and requires stamina from the musicians.Duration: 12:30

A Mother's Love (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Ciechomski, Brad

A mother's love is boundless, never-ending, gentle, and caressing. Written upon the passing of the composer's mother, this composition opens with a pure and simple melodic statement that later opens into the warmth of the full ensemble sound, much like the comfort of a mother's embrace. The opening interval of the minor third is often heard by a child calling mom-my, and the piece closes with the bells playing this motive. The composer dedicates this piece to the memory of his mother, who always believed in his hopes and dreams.Duration: 4.15

Behold, Go Forth and Be Joyful! (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Rutter, John - Noble, Paul

These three separate compositions have been adapted into one suite. The first movement, Behold, the Tabernacle of God, is to be performed with the trumpets and trombones placed in the rear or balcony of the concert hall. The effect is to surround the audience with antiphonal sound, thereby, in effect, placing them in the tabernacle of God. The arrangement is adapted from the original scoring for orchestra and chorus. The choral parts are played by the trumpets and trombones. The second movement, Go forth into the world in peace, is scored for woodwinds, horns, euphonium, tuba, and string bass, in keeping with the original scoring for chorus with strings alone. For the third movement, O be joyful in the Lord, the conductor may determine the placement of the trumpets and trombones, either leaving them in the antiphonal setting, or returning them to the stage.

Mother Goose Suite (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Ravel, Maurice - Turner, Jeffrey E.

Ravel wrote the Mother Goose Suite for two children who were very special to him. His fascination with the wonder and imagination of childhood are evident in this piece. This arrangement will take your young band on a journey through the enchanted world of fairy tales - from the reflective Sleeping Beauty Pavane, to the playful Tom Thumb, the exotic Empress of the Pagoda, through the courtship of Beauty and the Beast, and concluding where all fairy tales must, with a happily-ever-after ending in The Fairy Garden. This piece is an excellent vehicle for featuring your soloists, and the well- rafted orchestration will showcase the wealth of sound and colours in any band. A Festive Tribute (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Bach, Johann Sebastian - Sparke, Philip

A Festive Tribute is an arrangement of a splendid chorus which Bach first used in the secular Cantata 207 of 1726, but is perhaps better known in its later version, which appears in Cantata 207a, the descriptively titled Auf, schmetternde Tone der muntern Trompeten, which cannot be adequately translated but means something along the lines of 'let the trumpets sound'. While the lyrics are perhaps a little obsequious, much of the music for this cantata is celebratory and lushly scored for a large orchestra including trumpets, oboes d'amore and flutes, making it an ideal piece for a concert band arrangement.Duration: 3:00
