Crossing Parallels - Kathryn Salfelder
Following the success of Kathryn Salfelder's Cathedrals (2009), the American Bandmasters Association commissioned her to create this new work for band. Premiered at the 2010 ABA National Convention, Crossing Parallels offers a creative tapestry of engaging sounds and textures as it combines elements of Renaissance and Baroque musical gestures with contemporary notions of set theory and harmony. The seemingly contradictory nature of the title is reflected in the overlapping and intertwining of thematic ideas vying for attention.

Intuition - Larry Clark
Intuition is a march for the youngest of students that uses only the first six notes of the Bb scale and the most difficult rhythm is two repeated eighth-notes. Even with limited technical demands, you won't believe how much this sounds like a more involved march. It has all of the hallmarks of an American march in form with three strains with different melodic material. The only difference is there is no modulation at the trio. It is a perfect vehicle to introduce this important form to beginning students, and its exceptionally tuneful as well!

December - Robert Buckley
December was inspired by the holiday season in Canada. It reflects the sounds, the sights, and the moods of that magical time of year. December starts off joyfully with a playful theme of celebration. This leads into an icy, reverent, winter solstice theme. Then there is a further development of the original joyful theme and a jubilant build to the finish. December can be performed with or without the optional choir part. A wonderful addition to any holiday concert.

Kilauea - Brian Balmages
Simple aleatoric passages help recreate the effect of an erupting volcano in this powerful yet extremely playable composition. Using bass drum to suggest the groaning of the volcano, the lyrical opening foreshadows the wildness of the eruption, and in transition, students play any notes and rhythms desired. As the lava begins to flow, a cacophonous ostinato appears over a menacing theme in the trumpets and low voices. In addition to the regular part, an optional advanced snare drum part is included for accomplished percussionists. The combination of styles along with exciting new sounds for young band make this a must for your next concert! (2:40)

Christmas Colours - Bruce Fraser
'Christmas Colours' is a palette consisting of several Christmas songs. Bruce Fraser has mainly used the colours green (the colour of holly) and white (the colour of snow). This composition begins with the chiming of festive bells - if you listen well, however, you can already hear short fragments from 'The Holly and the Ivy', whose entire melody is finally played, alternated with 'The Sussex Carol'. After this, the pace slows down and the stately 'See amid the Winter Snow' sounds, but parts from 'Jingle Bells' and 'Silent Night' can also be heard. Then, after walking under 'The Holly and the Ivy' once again, the celebration of Christmas may begin!

Sakura Variations - Kees Vlak
The blooming of the cherry trees each spring is a great event in Japan. In the evening friends meet under the pink and white cherry blossoms for a picnic. It is a striking sight, especially in big cities. Vendors sell Japanese food, entertainers andclowns perform, and the typically cautious Japanese seem to be more relaxed during the cherry blossom, or "Sakura". Kees Vlak captured this atmosphere with his "Sakura Variation"; its theme employs a subtle drum rhythm. The first variation is titled"clowns" and opens with three bass drum strikes. The theme appears in 3/4 time and is repeated several times with surprising changes. An impetuous tempo with dissonant elements suggests a clown's mischievous behaviour. The second variation in a minormode sounds very sad and dramatic. Is this the sadness when thinking of the end of the cherry blossom, as all the petals "snow" down from the trees? The cherry trees will bloom again next year, so the finale celebrates a joyful "Sakura".
