"God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen" is a famous and popular Christmas carol. This arrangement is presented in two very different ways. One section is a slow and mysterious with a steady ostinato and melody in the clarinets above while the other section is an upbeat swing with a walking bass line, jazz harmonies, and backgrounds. This invigorating work makes great use of percussion. Reminiscent of Holst's famous portrayal of Mars, the driving rhythmic motif is immediately introduced with rhythmic hits reinforced in the upper brass and woodwinds. Several themes are layered for an effect that is easy to achieve with bands at this level. A brief lyrical section provides some creative harmonies which will help develop the musicianship of your band. The opening material then returns for a powerful conclusion. Highly recommended!

While the title evokes images of 18th century forms, there is no mistaking the contemporary harmonic emphasis in this fascinating work. A bi-chordal pattern serves as a lovely cushion for a solo trumpet recitative, leading to a reflective, flowing second movement. Finally, the concluding dance is lively with satisfying brass punctuations and dynamic contrasts. Ranges are not extreme in this fresh and approachable work.

When it first appeared in print, the work was widely performed by Salvation Army bands around the world. Variations on 'Laudate Dominum' - Edward Gregson
The theme is a noble hymn tune by Sir Hubert H. Parry, associated with the words 'O praise ye the Lord'. There are seven contrasting variations that will provide much interest to the player as well as the listener, the seventh of which is a fugato which leads into a triumphant finale where the theme is heard for the first time in its completion. This, we feel, will be a significant work for Wind Band as it has been for the brass band movement.
